The Very Best Electric Toothbrushes You Can Buy Right Now

A smile is the first thing you notice about a person — for better or for worse — and we want ours to be remembered for its bright and shining fabulosity.

You can call us obsessed with our teeth and you would be correct. And why shouldn't we be? A smile is the first thing you notice about a person — for better or for worse — and we want ours to be remembered for its bright and shining fabulosity. You can use the whitening filter on FaceTune all you want, but an in-person flash of your pearly whites never lies.

Another reason to prioritize dental care: it's not just vanity, it's hygiene. Picking the wrong toothbrush, or brushing incorrectly, can have serious consequences.

That's why we're preferential to electric toothbrushes over the cheap plastic kind you get for free at the dentist. The brushes' vibrations do much of the work for you — and way better than your hand alone can. Also, a number of electric toothbrushes now have timers so you can be extra sure you're brushing for the full recommended two minutes.

Ahead, you'll find our absolute favorite electric toothbrush from some of the top-rated brands. Each one has been tried and tested for quality and value, and we break down all the differences so you can pick the very best one for your own needs. Now that's something to smile about.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Series 9300

There are toothbrushes…and then there are smart toothbrushes. And let us tell you, once you go smart, you’ll never go for a random grocery store brand again. Philips Sonicare’s new DiamondClean line of brushes dole out four types of cleanings — regular ol’ clean, one for whitening, an option for gum health and then the whopper, “deep clean+” … for those mornings when you just need a whole lot of extra help. The brush heads are comprised of smart sensors that are able to choose which cleaning you’re most in need of and also select which of the three intensity levels your chompers can handle. What really differentiates the DiamondClean brushes from the competition, however, is its built-in Bluetooth technology that allows the corresponding app to give you some major insight into your brushing habits — like a diagram of your mouth that depicts where you are continually missing or over-brushing, alerts when it’s time to replace the brush head, and personalized coaching for better brushing technique. Need more convincing? DiamondClean removes up to ten times more plaque than a regular toothbrush, whiter teeth are guaranteed within a week and healthier gums within two weeks. We love the glitzy glass tumbler charging station (that can also be used for rinsing your mouth, score!) and the soft pink hue — yep, the same one that Real Housewife of Beverly Hills’ Kyle Richards Instagrammed recently. — Courtney Thompson, contributing editor, home

quip

We're all guilty of using a toothbrush a little longer than we should ... That's why quip is such a godsend: You can subscribe to get $5 brush head refills delivered every 3 months, so there's absolutely no remembering required on your part. They even have family plans so you can cover the entire household! But the best thing about quip has to be the simplicity of the design. Think about it like an upgrade on your basic drugstore toothbrush. And at just $45 for the system and $5 for refills — yes, you read that correctly — it's by far the most affordable offering on our list.

Foreo Issa Hybrid

Electric-toothbrush adherents are a pretty loyal lot. However, those who swear by Foreo's ISSA Hybrid Electric Toothbrush are even fiercer in their devotion. The tool uses soft silicone and PBT polymer bristles to wipe out plaque while staying extra gentle on gums. Plus, the toothbrush feels way more pleasant than others of its ilk: the soft, hybrid bristles deliver a little gum massage that makes brushing actually enjoyable. What's more, this blend of bristles harbors less bacteria than other types, making the brush ultra hygienic. Oh, and you can also charge this brush using a USB — no charging dock needed! — which makes it easy to travel with. And it comes in four fun colors! — Jenny Berg, contributor

Oral-B Genius Pro 8000

I recently discovered the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000. Where have you been all my life? This brush has so many high-tech features, and they aren’t just for show — they are actually turning me into a better brusher. Dentists constantly tell us to brush for at least two minutes, but that can be difficult to track. Not with this electric brush. It has a timer that reminds me every 30 seconds to switch to another quadrant of my mouth. Another concern is overly-aggressive brushing, both with manual and electric brushes. This brush has pressure-sensing technology that alerts you if you are brushing too hard and automatically slows down the brush head speed. But the coolest feature has to be the corresponding app with position detection technology. Use the included mount to put your phone at eye level, then brush facing the phone’s camera. That allows the app to track the brush position and show you areas you are missing.

The brush has a sleek design and comes with a smart travel case that you can use to charge the brush and your phone from one outlet. It comes with three brush heads and additional styles can be purchased separately. — Mitra Sorrels, contributor
