Fredrik Eklund Opens Up About His New "Emerging Style" After Moving to Los Angeles
The Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles agent explained how the West Coast changed his fashion and his kids' developing style sense.
The Million Dollar Listing New York cast members often crack jokes about each other's style, so when Fredrik Eklund made a lighthearted dig about Ryan Serhant's wardrobe on the show's August 19 episode, he was surprised by viewer feedback. "[People on] Twitter were like, 'That's rude,' 'This is so mean,' Fredrik recalled to Bravo Insider. "I mean, come on. It was hilarious...When you give shade, you have to deliver it with a little smirk."
Fredrik's joke about Ryan, whose signature look is a dapper suit, stemmed from his observation that the "fashion sense of real estate agents has changed" over the last few years. "When Ryan and I started the show, it was all suits, suits, suits," he said. "I was just editing my closet yesterday to be able to fit into the new house, and I literally have to give away about 50 suits," he said. "Not only have I outgrown the suits because my body type is different now, but it's just like, who wears suits these days?"
Certainly not Steve Gold. Although Steve has gotten heat from his costars about his laid-back work attire over the years, when he "came onto the show, he was a fresh fashion style," Fredrik explained. "He was also kind of telling what was happening with younger real estate agents in general in New York, that they were dressing down."
After moving to Los Angles in 2019 and joining the Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles cast for Season 13, Fredrik realized that many of the pieces from his NYC wardrobe wouldn't exactly work in his new surroundings. "I remember the first time I met the Brits [David Parnes and James Harris], they were in white t-shirts. That is very L.A.," he said. "I felt confused because I was like, 'What am I gonna do now? Like, I don't know how to dress here."
Of course, he quickly figured it out. "I kind of had to invent my own thing," said Fredrik, who considers Ralph Lauren, Armani, and Tiger of Sweden some of his go-to designers. "I wear very, very bright colors and [make] very unexpected choices where it mixes New York and L.A." Now, if he does wear a suit, Fredrik might pair it with "a neon pink t-shirt and, like, really crazy shoes."
Fredrik's wardrobe is a reflection of this new chapter in his life. "I like my emerging style. It's not for everybody, but I like it," he said. He's proud to rock his "own sense of style" and also admires that about Tracy Tutor. "I'm obsessed with her wardrobe and how she does it," he shared. "She takes it to the next level." Although he isn't looking to trade wardrobes with any of his castmates, like many of us, Fredrik would love to check out Tracy's closet: "Can you imagine me in some of her dresses? That would be amazing."
The person's clothing he wants but can't have? His son, Freddy's. Noting the 3-year-old "has the most amazing fabrics and patterns and cool stuff, Fredrik admitted, "I can never find stuff like that for myself. I wanna walk around like that."
Fredrik has never been afraid to explore fashion, and he wants to give that same freedom to Freddy and his twin sister, Milla. "She's gravitating to very girly things, like pink stuff, and he gravitates to really, like, boy stuff. Blue is his favorite color," he shared. "As two gay men, [Derek and I] never try to enforce that or direct them in any way. I even said to [Freddy] he can wear dresses if he wants, but this is who they are."
