Tatcha's New Silk Canvas Primer Is Heaven in a Tub

The highly-anticipated primer sold out immediately — but you can get it right now.

By Talia Ergas

On an average day, I don't wear much makeup: a bit of concealer to hide those nasty dark circles, mascara, and a light swipe of blush. That's it. So, I never really saw a need to incorporate a primer into my daily routine. Sure, if I'm going somewhere fancy and putting on a full face of makeup, I know to always prep with primer to make my beauty look last all night. But I never really considered it a daily necessity for my more low maintenance makeup routine. That is, until Tatcha's Silk Canvas primer landed in my sample box.

When cult-favorite Japanese beauty brand Tatcha (that's the brand behind that ultra moisturizing water cream everyone's obsessed with) launched it's very first primer earlier this month, people were excited (to say the least). The Silk Canvas sold out completely in less than a week! And after testing the product myself, I know exactly why.

Unlike the liquid tube primers you're probably used to, Tatcha's balm-like version is housed in a beautiful wide and shallow tub. To collect the product, you scrape it up with a lavender coin — it even has a dash mark so you know exactly the amount you need. Then, you warm the product between your palms and apply it all over your face.

The first time I slathered Tatcha's Silk Canvas on my face, I had a true oh em gee moment. The very-appropriately-named primer made my skin feel like actual silk. (BTW: Hydrolyzed Silk and Silk Powder are actually on the ingredient list.) In fact, after applying it, I kept feeling my face all day to see if it was still silky. (The answer was yes, even hours later.)

Like all primers, Tatcha's creates an even base to apply makeup and make it last extra long, but it even goes step further: The Silk Canvas creates protective barrier over your skin to keep makeup and pollution out. AKA it prevents clogged pores.

But that's not all this heavenly primer does. It acts like a blurring filter for your face, minimizing the look of your pores, fine lines, and other imperfections. The balm's pink and gold pearl helps to even out your skin tone overall. That's plenty of reason to wear it every day, even if you're not going to wear any makeup.

Remember earlier when I said the primer sold out completely in a week? I'm going to go ahead and snatch up two tubs right now, before it sells out again.
