Britney Spears Needs a Different Type of Permission from Her Father if She Wants to Get Married
Jamie Spears has had conservatorship over his daughter Britney since 2008.
Britney Spears and Sam Asghari have been dating for a couple years now, and she's said the model and personal trainer has been inspiring her every day. While the couple hasn't announced an engagement or even hinted at future nuptials, that hasn't stopped people from speculating that she might want to get married again some day (third time's the charm?).
An anonymous source told Us Weekly that he would need to ask her father, Jamie Spears, for her hand in marriage — not because it's a sweet tradition, but because Jamie still has the same conservatorship over Britney that a court granted in 2008.
“Britney can’t get married unless Jamie approves it, and Jamie is inclined not to, because it would only [create complicated] legal issues," the source told the publication.
Jamie is currently focused on his health, and his family is helping him out. Britney put her Las Vegas residency on indefinite hold in January in order to be closer to Jamie, who suffered a ruptured colon.
“I am dedicating my focus and energy to care for my family," she said in a statement. “We have a very special relationship and I want to be with my family at this time just like they have always been there for me.”
