Chrissy Teigen says she didn’t immediately know John Legend was “the one,” and that actually, at first, the two took things really slow.

She appeared in a Popsugar conversation called “Power Your Truth” in New York City alongside celebrity hairstylist and entrepreneur Jen Atkin, where she discussed their relationship.

“Seeing how well we got along and how similar our values were… We got engaged after five years, married after seven,” she said. “We really took our time with it. People ask, ‘Was it love at first sight?’ No. We grew together. We learned each other’s personalities. He was on tour the first year we were dating and we did our own thing.”

Teigen also added, “I never begged him to settle down.”

“Our vibe was the same,” she said. “I didn’t want him to look back and have regrets about who he wasn’t with or the things he should’ve done. I let him do all that, and now he can’t say s--t.”

Teigen did say the one thing she did know about Legend right away: that he would be a great dad.

“I knew John would be a good dad as soon as I met him,” she told the crowd. “He’s very warm and loving. I knew he’d be a great father to a daughter because he has so many female friends. He has so much respect for women, and he treats them as equals. He’s a sensitive soul, but he’s also very business savvy and straight to the point. The way he speaks to our daughter is very interactive and very ‘adult’. He’d wake up with me every single time I’d wake up just so I wouldn’t feel like I was alone in it in those first two months of having a baby.”

Ultimately, she said, she married the nice guy.

“Marry the nerd. Marry the dorks,” she said. “We call John Googy Browser. He’s always googling. You can ask him anything and he knows it immediately.”
