Prince William Says This Is How He'd React if One of His Kids Is Gay — and Shares His Fears
The royal dad of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis was questioned about his views during Pride Month.
Prince William is a loving father of three, but what would he say if any of his little royals came out as gay? He recently revealed that this has actually been a topic of conversation between him and wife Duchess Kate Middleton.
“Do you know what, I’ve been giving that some thought recently because a couple of other parents said that to me as well,” the dad of Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1, said at an event at Albert Kennedy Trust in England on Wednesday, according to PEOPLE. “I think, you really don’t start thinking about that until you are a parent, and I think — obviously absolutely fine by me.”
His potential fears about that scenario have only to do with other people.
“The one thing I’d be worried about is how they, particularly the roles my children fill, is how that is going to be interpreted and seen,” he noted. “So Catherine and I have been doing a lot of talking about it to make sure they were prepared. I think communication is so important with everything, in order to help understand it you’ve got to talk a lot about stuff and make sure how to support each other and how to go through the process."
Reactions from outside the family are unpredictable, and that causes him to worry.
"It worries me not because of them being gay, it worries me as to how everyone else will react and perceive it and then the pressure is then on them," he explained.
Prince William's brother, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, have also been outspoken in support of LGBTQ rights to carry their late mother Princess Diana's activism forward. Prince Harry and Markle's official Duke and Duchess Instagram account currently shines a light on several leading nonprofit organizations that continue the fight for the LGBTQ community.
"Continuing with our tradition to rotate the accounts we follow based on causes and social issues that matter to us: For the month of June we 'proudly' shine a light on PRIDE," they wrote. "This month we pay tribute to the accounts supporting the LGBTQ+ community - those young and old, their families and friends, accounts that reflect on the past and are hopeful for a deservedly more inclusive future. We stand with you and support you. Because it’s very simple: love is love."
