Nicole Kidman Gives Rare Interview, Actually Discusses Her Marriage to Tom Cruise
"It was protection," the Australian actress said.
According to recent allegations from Leah Remini, Tom Cruise's famous exes have good incentive to keep their lips zipped about being married to the actor. "I keep wondering — why haven’t Katie Holmes or Nicole Kidman spoken out [about Scientology?]" Remini said. "I assume they were forced to sign prohibitive documents."
Whether that's true or not, it is true that Kidman rarely speaks about being married to the Risky Business star — but, now she's explaining why that is in her own words.
In an essay for New York Magazine, the actress said: "Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful."
But she did offer a little insight into that chapter of her young life. "That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me — it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. I would work, but I was still very much cocooned. So when I came out of it at 32, 33, it’s almost like I had to grow up," she shared.
She added some thoughts on the #MeToo movement. "Of course I’ve had #MeToo moments — since I was little! But do I want to expose them in an article? No. Do they come out in my work? Absolutely. I’m open and raw. I want to have my well of experience and emotion tapped into, used — and I’m not just talking about sexual harassment. I’m talking about loss, death, the full array of life," she shared.
