The Bravo’s Project Runway designer created show-stopping styles for Melissa McCarthy and more stars to wear on Hollywood’s biggest night.
On March 12, the biggest names in Hollywood hit the red carpet in Los Angeles for the 2023 Academy Awards, and four stars stunned in designs by Bravo’s Project Runway mentor Christian Siriano.
Actress Melissa McCarthy stepped out in a long-sleeved bright red gown with a dramatic tulle skirt and exaggerated shoulders. Apparently, the dress came with some additional drama: It had to be re-made at the last minute after a pipe burst in Christian’s studio. “We were just freaking out all day,” Christian said, per Page Six. “I took the last dress with me on the plane yesterday… I dropped it off myself.”
He added of the bold ballgown: “It’s a big moment. She’s about to be in such an incredible film for Disney playing Ursula in The Little Mermaid, how fabulous. So I just wanted to give her a really fabulous fashion moment.”
More “fabulous fashion moment[s]” from the designer included his first plus-size menswear look for actor Harvey Guillen: a black-and-silver brocade suit, with a blazer that extended into a flowing train. YouTuber Lilly Singh also echoed the cascading suit jacket style with a fuchsia set, while Iran-born actress Shohreh Aghdashloo made a significant statement with an issue close to home.
“[T]his was a chance to take the case of the Iranian freedom fighters to the ultimate platform of arts and sciences,” the actress told The Hollywood Reporter of her glamorous black-and-white look that featured an earnest message on its fabric. “I knew I wanted to wear something that would include the slogan of Iran’s freedom fighters — ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ — as they continue what’s one of the biggest human-rights efforts in history.”
