The 2018 Oscar Nominations Include Some Pleasant Surprises: See the Complete List

This year's list is filled with history-making nominations.

By Jenny Berg

Already saving the date for the 2018 Oscars? We are, too — and we're all in good company. Half of Hollywood was out of bed before 6 A.M. this morning to hear the nominations for the industry's most prestigious awards ceremony. Of course, we too had to tune in live as Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis announced the nominees from all 24 categories at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The women's rights-oriented #MeToo and Time's Up movements have been hot topics in Hollywood, which led to speculation before this morning's broadcast about how the 2018 ceremony would recognize women in the industry. For example, men have dominated wins in the Best Director category for years. The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow, who won the Academy Award in 2009, is the only female director to have ever taken home the statue, and only four women have ever been nominated. So many wondered if Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig would receive an Oscar nomination this year — and in the end, she did.

There was also talk that cinematographer Rachel Morrison could make Oscar history if she was nominated for her work in Mudbound. The nod would make Morrison the first woman to ever be nominated in the category, and ultimately she did receive a nod. Mary J. Blige was also nominated for her work in Mudbound as Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

On the flipside, there was some speculation as to how James Franco would fare in the nominations. While Franco took home Best Actor awards for his work in The Disaster Artist at the 2018 Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards, he has since been accused of sexual misconduct by five women. And, at the 2018 Women's March, actress Scarlett Johansson called him out for wearing a Time's Up pin at the Golden Globes. Coincidentally or not, he was not nominated for an Oscar. However, Christopher Plummer, who replaced Kevin Spacey in All The Money in the World after the latter was accused of sexual misconduct, did receive a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

Some less controversial or surprising nominations came in the Best Picture category, where award season frontrunners such as Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Shape of Water earned nods. Other top nod-earners included Dunkirk, which was nominated in eight categories, and Get Out, which has the chance to take home the gold in five categories.

Who will win? Only time, and a star-studded awards ceremony, will tell. Jimmy Kimmel will host the 2018 Oscars, which will be broadcast on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 4. Check out the full list of nominations, below.
