In a January 27 Instagram post, Barbara explained her reason for entering the race, writing, “I’m running for Mayor of New York City because the city that I love, the city of opportunity where I built my business and my dreams, is in a state of crisis. I may not be a politician, but I’m a Bronx-born New Yorker who isn’t fearful of the hard work and tough decisions that lay ahead. It will take a builder to rebuild NYC, and I’m the woman to do it.”

Barbara has previously explained how her upbringing has been important to her career. In an interview with PEOPLE in which she spoke abut her successful construction management career, Barbara said, “I have to start by telling you where I was born, because it plays a major role in my development. I was born in the Bronx. I always reference that because it gives you this edge.”

Although the RHONY friend “may not be a politician,” her resume does have some impressive feats in addition to her construction company: she has a line of tools called DIYVA, is an author, a home improvement correspondent, and a New York Daily News columnist.
