Below Deck's Tyler Rowland Apologizes to Rhylee Gerber: "You Deserve Better"

The Below Deck Season 6 deckhands open up about that disastrous date.

By Laura Rosenfeld

Rhylee Gerber and Tyler Rowland's first official date did not go as planned — at least where Rhylee is concerned. Instead of getting to know each other better and seeing where this relationship could go, the date (and any future these two may have had together) came to a screeching halt when Tyler said that he wanted to "pump the brakes" with Rhylee.

How to Watch

Watch Below Deck on Bravo Mondays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock. Catch up on the Bravo App.

Since it doesn't seem like Tyler had any intentions of pursuing a relationship with Rhylee, it begs the question: Why did he ask her out in the first place? Well, Tyler explained all during the Below Deck Season 6 After Show, which you can view, above. "My goal was just to get to know her as a person, you know? I realized I was super attracted to her, but I didn't know who she was. We just hung out and worked together and then had fun in the cabin," he said. "It's super easy to work with someone and then just talk about work all day and talk about Ashton [Pienaar], Ross [Inia], [Laura Betancourt], everyone. So on the day, I wanted to really get to know her."

But the date didn't go as well as Tyler had hoped. "First thing I said was like, 'OK, no work talk. The boat is right there. We just left the gang. They're right up there probably watching us right now,'" he shared. "And we had nothing to talk about it. It was crickets. It was the most awkward date I have ever been on in my entire life."

Tyler shared during the After Show that he felt like he and Rhylee were two "totally different people," and he had "a minor freakout" when she talked about joining his plans for after the charter season.

"We really did connect, I thought, unless it wasn't sincere on his part. I really enjoyed getting to know him that morning in the crow's nest. If I like somebody, I'm not gonna wait for something to happen; I'm gonna suggest," Rhylee expressed during the After Show. "I wasn't sitting there, writing in a diary, 'Mrs. Tyler Rowland.' I wasn't planning a future with him. I wasn't trying to entrap him or ensnare him in anything other than the fact that I liked him. I thought we had the same interests, and I thought that that could lead to something more."

Tyler explained why he felt the need to break things off with Rhylee during their date. "It kind of shocked me because I was accepting the fact that, hey, this is kind of like summer camp, the charter season's coming to an end, I was already accepting the fact that we were done, and I didn't ever even think past the charter season, and she's thinking past. And I'm like, 'Oh, s--t, what did I do?'" he said. "I instantly thought about my future and how I didn't think Rhylee would be a part of it. And then I should be like, 'I should probably tell her so she doesn't think of these crazy boat plans in the Caribbean and retiring early.'"

Rhylee was hurt and visibly upset during the episode after Tyler put an end to any hope of them having a future together. She even shed some tears during an interview on Below Deck.

Recently, Tyler has shown a lot of remorse for and regret over how he ended things with Rhylee. "I apologize for treating you the way I did and I’m not proud of my childish ways. I should have grown some huevos and let you know my intentions before leading you on," he tweeted. "We had some great times and you deserve better than that."

Tyler said in another tweet that he has learned from the experience. "I have grown as a person from this experience and only want to become a better man from it," he shared.

We'll just have to wait and see what Rhylee thinks of Tyler's latest comments. Until then, check out a preview of what's coming up in the Season 6 finale of Below Deck Tuesday at 9/8c, below.
