The week of August 25 to 31 is Black Breastfeeding Week, an event created to shed light on the “gaping racial disparity in breastfeeding rates,” according to the organization’s official website. A number of Bravo mothers have taken the occasion to speak out about their breastfeeding journeys, including Ashley Darby and Wendy Osefo of The Real Housewives of Potomac, and Dr. Kendra Segura of Married to Medicine Los Angeles.

In an August 26 Instagram post, Ashley opened up about her experience breastfeeding her baby boy, Dean.

“Becoming a mother to this beautiful human has been the most rewarding and humbling experience I could’ve ever imagined,” the RHOP mom captioned a sweet photo of her with her son. “Never could I be truly prepared for this journey and all it entails, or how much I would change in the process! My sensitivity and compassion runs deeper than the sea, for human life is just so beautiful.”

“I am in even more awe of women and our ability to care so far beyond our own beings,” Ashley continued. “During this Black Breastfeeding Week, I honor you my sisters and the commitment you make (or have made) for your children. History hasn’t been kind of Black mothers, and the present is still not fair. I love you, I see you, I support you wholeheartedly.”

Dr. Kendra shared an illustration by artist Andrea Pippins, with the caption, “HAPPY BLACK BREASTFEEDING WEEK! By our histories and by the truths we know from living, our possibilities are greater than any imagination. For all the days that have felt hopeless, we invite you to enter a period of nourishment to revive. Where there has been loss, grief, and uncertainty, our restoration is key to being present and imagining healthy futures. And all through #BBW20, we reclaim our time, lives and families.”

In Wendy’s post, she revealed that she has been breastfeeding her daughter, Kamrynn Kapri, for more than a year.

“It is Black Breastfeeding Week and @Kamrynnkapri and I have been going strong for 13 months!” Wendy wrote alongside an adorable photo of her baby girl. “It has been a challenge to say the least, but so glad we reached the one year milestone. Sending my love to all moms—our work is not easy, but the journey is so worth it!”
