Captain Sandy Yawn Reflects on Her Criticism of Hannah Ferrier in Below Deck Med Season 4

The Below Deck Mediterranean boss knows "it wasn’t always smooth sailing" with the chief stew.

By Laura Rosenfeld

Captain Sandy Yawn and Hannah Ferrrier seemed to be leaps and bounds ahead of where they were in Season 3 of Below Deck Mediterranean, working together to help lead the crew to another successful charter season. But as Season 4 of Below Deck Med came to a close, Captain Sandy expressed her disappointment with the chief stew's work, ultimately telling Hannah that she questions her passion for the yachting industry.

Hannah wasn't happy to hear Captain Sandy's critique, which ended up causing some anxiety for the chief stew. But now that she has had some time to reflect on the season, Hannah said she can better understand where Captain Sandy is coming from.

"To me, Sandy's position and the deck crew, I can understand how they can be passionate and want to move up the ladder and things," Hannah explained during the Below Deck Mediterranean Season 4 After Show (clip above). "I am passionate about traveling and earning money. I'm passionate about the guests. I love giving the guests a really good experience and seeing them leave and having a good time. Table decor, cleaning toilets, making beds — [I'm] not so passionate about."

But Hannah had to admit that all of her years in yachting have left her a bit jaded about the job sometimes, which she said her Below Deck counterpart and friend Kate Chastain can also relate to. "If you go ask 100 people how many of them go to work because they absolutely love their jobs and they're so passionate about it," Hannah said. "Me and Kate were actually laughing the other day because we're like, we go and do charter seasons now like kind of real yachties because we're like, you've just got to put your head down and bum up and have the best thing and all the tips and then you can not do it for a little while afterwards, you know?"

Though things were a bit tense between Captain Sandy and Hannah toward the end of this season of Below Deck Med, they did end up leaving things on a high note with a big hug goodbye. "Although it wasn’t always smooth sailing, @HannahFerrier put out some amazing décor this last charter," Captain Sandy tweeted during Monday night's episode. "She is an incredible person and a wonderful chief stew! Thank you for your hard work this season."

In fact, Captain Sandy showed her gratitude to the entire crew this season. "Thanks to my crew for overcoming all of the obstacles thrown our way [and] working together to pull off an amazing season!" she tweeted. "Was an honor being your Capt."
