Carrie Fisher Dies at 60: Celebrities Pay Tribute to the Late Actress

The iconic actress' famous friends and fans are honoring her legacy.

Carrie Fisher has passed away after suffering a heart attack. She was 60 years old. 

Family spokesman Simon Halls confirmed the news to PEOPLE in a statement released on behalf of Carrie's daughter, Billie Lourd. “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” the statement said. “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.” 

Carrie went into cardiac arrest during a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday, December 23. She was then treated and hospitalized in Los Angeles, where she passed away. 

Carrie was best known for her iconic role as Princess Leia Organa in the original Star Wars trilogy. She reprised her role in the most recent installment of the saga, 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Carrie had memorable roles in other films like The Blues Brothers, Hannah and Her Sisters, and When Harry Met Sally. The actress also made many TV guest appearances over the years, including as Abby's (Lisa Edelstein) agent Cat in Seasons 1 and 2 of Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. 

In addition to acting, Carrie was also a prolific memoirist whose books included Postcards from the Edge, Wishful Drinking, and The Princess Diarist, which was released in November. With her latest and now final book, Carrie grabbed headlines after revealing her on-set affair with her Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford. 

Tributes to Carrie have begun to pour in on social media from some of the biggest names in Hollywood following the news of her passing on Tuesday.
