It is a major day for same-sex couples in the United States: the Supreme Court ruled June 26 that the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional, thereby allowing gay couples to have federal benefits in states where same-sex marriage is legal. SCOTUS also struck down California's Prop 8 law, which essentially allows same-sex marriages to be legal there now.
Among the millions of Americans celebrating the landmark decision is Bravo's Million Dollar Listing New York star Fredrik Eklund, whose marriage to Derek Kaplan was hanging in the balance. Until today. "I high kicked so hard, I fell on my back!" he tells the Dish.
And so we asked the real estate agent to share how he was feeling about the decision -- and what it means for his marriage.
"I'm so incredibly happy and proud to be an American today! DOMA is dead!! It's an historic day that I will never forget. Derek and I got married in February here in the US and we have lived with this uncertainty and with Derek going back and forth between New York and London since immigration is federal and we are NOT recognized as a married couple and have not been able to live together full time -- until today. This is something the rest of the season of Million Dollar Listing New York will show, our meetings at the attorneys, our wedding and our talks about having a family as a married couple one day and being able to live together like all married straight couples. I feel free today, I feel loved, I feel proud. I'm PROUD over the Supreme Court's decision! I called Derek in London and cried, and told him to come home. I also want to thank all the other people out there supporting this decision, and making marriage equality a reality. I'm high-kicking as I'm writing this!"
We are all high-kicking Fredrik!
Fredrik's marriage becomes the hot topic of #MDLNY tonight as he and Derek discuss a prenup. Don't miss it at 9/8C.
