Halle Berry on That Infamous Adrien Brody Oscar Kiss: “What the F*** Is Happening?”
The star reveals that she was as shocked as everybody else by the viral moment.
Back at the 2003 Oscars, way before Ellen DeGeneres' selfie broke Twitter and Envelopegate nearly broke the show itself, there came one of the awards show’s earliest viral moments in the form of Best Actor winner Adrien Brody who — seemingly on a whim — decided to plant a very passionate kiss on presenter Halle Berry before accepting his award.
Thursday night in the Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen Clubhouse, Halle got very real when a caller asked if the notorious kiss had been planned in advanced. “No, that was not planned,” she said emphatically, “I knew nothing about it,” she continued before asking Andy if she could get real about what was really going on in her head.
Of course, Andy said yes. “I was like ‘what the f***” is happening right now?’ That is what was going through my mind,” Halle confessed to the audience’s laughs.
“And because I was there the year before [when she had won for Monster’s Ball] and I know the feeling of being out of your body, I just f***ing went with it,” the Kingsman: The Golden Circle star continued, solidifying just how gracious (not to mention chill) she really is.
When Andy asked how the kiss was, Halle revealed with a laugh that she had no idea. “I don’t know. I was too focused on what the f*** was going on right now. I don’t even know,” she said.
Adrien himself clearly has no problems fondly remembering the details, telling Vanity Fair a few years ago that the kiss was “one of the most memorable moments. You can say time slowed down.”
