Hello Nasty: Rebecca Masson on her 'Just Desserts' Departure

"I still love the Beastie Boys, but I hate falafel."

By Colleen Werthmann

After her Beastie Boys based banishment from Top Chef Just Desserts last night, Rebecca Masson tells us that she left the competition with her head -- and her cast -- held high.

"I thought that I would breakdown really quickly, but I stayed this long, with this nice broken hand... I'm strong!" she tells us in our exclusive Exit Interview. "I can stand up for myself and I can stand up for my pastries."

Yes, in the end, it wasn't a broken hand that did in Rebecca -- it was falafel (well, with an assist from the Beastie Boys). The normally sunny chef, who's been consistently praised by the judges for her flavors, was taken down by a Beasties-inspired elimination challenge. Faced with the challenge -- laid down by Ad-Rock himself, Adam Horovitz -- to make desserts using foods mentioned in the group's lyrics, Rebecca presented a falafel panna cotta with beer ice cream. And the reviews? Head judge Johnny Iuzzini pronounced her dish "a garlic bomb," and Ad-Rock ad-libbed, "What the falafel? ... It was nasty, yo."

The episode was a rough one for Rebecca, beginning with the root vegetable Quickfire. As host Gail Simmons and guest judge Jordan Kahn approached her, she nervously confessed that she couldn't cook savory ingredients to save her life. Gail immediately counseled, "You don't want to say that on national television," but sure enough, Rebecca's Quickfire potato dessert fell flat. And then... Falafelgate.

Although Rebecca rarely complained about her broken wrist and cooked with one arm in a stiff cast, she was clearly out of her element this week when it came to ingredients and let her attitude sink her, admitting, "I still love the Beastie Boys but I hate falafel right now."

So what's next for her? "Um, just keep working towards opening my own shop, so hopefully people see on TV that I can make more than falafel... and they'll come buy more stuff!"

Whatever the future, Rebecca can be glad about one event in her last episode: Ad-Rock signed her cast.
