James Kennedy Explains Why He Can't Get Along with Jax Taylor

James Kennedy and Jax Taylor have famously never gotten along with one another. So when Jax and James' ex, Kristen Doute, showed up to one of the Vanderpump Rules DJ's shows on Monday night's episode, things got tense pretty quickly — especially after SUR employees GG and Ellie confronted James and his girlfriend, Raquel Leviss, about rumors that the DJ had cheated on her.

How to Watch

Watch Vanderpump Rules on Bravo Tuesdays at 8/7c and next day on Peacock. Catch up on the Bravo app.

"I honestly didn't see anyone walk in until like halfway through my performance. I kind of noticed that Jax was there in the back, so obviously you get an adrenaline [rush] and you start taking your mind off what matters. They were there to be a distraction, so I just felt a little [like], 'Who do I see here anyway?' Just carry on with the show, get it done and then sort it out after, I guess," he told The Daily Dish. "Honestly, if you're not there for the music and to support, why are you even there at all? I hate the fact that people would even show up with bad vibes, negative intentions. You get ready just to know you're gonna sabotage someone else's night is just ridiculous."

Jax and James Face off at James' Show

To say that tensions have always been high between James and the SURvers would be an understatement. But, James thinks his issues with Jax stem from the age difference between them.

"Basically me and Tom [Sandoval] get along great. Obviously Jax doesn't like that because Tom's kind of, as age goes, in between me and Jax," James explained. "Jax is the oldest, then Tom, then me — and Tom can kind of be friends with both of us in that sense. But it doesn't really make sense for me to be friends with Jax because he's just so much older than me that he gets insecure and weird when we're out and he's just like, 'Why am I drinking with', at the time, 'a 22-year-old kid?' So he never really liked me from the get-go and then especially when I just start poking his buttons or taking away some of the limelight from him from SUR. He's not a guy that likes that — especially from a younger, skinnier, whatever version of what people say to be himself. It's kind of ridiculous, so I feel like he's threatened sometimes."

However,  James admits that there have been times when they've almost been friends. "Jax and I have had nights where we've gotten along," he said. "In the time, in the moment, we're both tipsy and it's like, 'Whatever, dude, I don't get why we fight.' The next morning comes and he's hungover and I'm still James and he just always gets pissed off at things."

So, why is it James is able to be pals with Sandoval and Ariana Madix? "They're not really like fishing around looking for dirt on their friends. They really just enjoy life. The whole time, the others, they just go out, get wasted, and literally talking s*** about everyone else that isn't there with them," he said. "It's really unhealthy. Tom and Ariana go on hot air balloon rides and go to comedy shows and just have fun. They don't really go to the club and get wasted and talk s*** about their friends. So I feel they're real people, better people than the rest — Jax, Kristen and all those people."
