What does John Legend have in common with Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale, and Jeremy Sisto? The singer is the latest talent who has been tapped to play Jesus Christ. He'll appear as the lead character in NBC's live rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar.
“We’re all overjoyed to have world-class musical artist and producer John Legend starring as Jesus,” NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement provided to to TV Line. “This score demands a singer with an amazing range and an actor with great depth, and there isn’t anyone better to bring this story to a new audience. His casting is also groundbreaking as the traditional image of Christ will be seen in a new way.”
Legend tweeted about the casting news on Tuesday.
Legend will have quite the foil as a co-star: old-school shock rocker Alice Cooper is set to play King Herod.
