Kim Kardashian Is Upsetting Everyone Again with a New Kimoji Candle
It's been a rough week for Kim K.
Welcome to the Kim Kardashian scandal du jour! If she isn’t getting torn apart on Twitter, Kim isn’t even alive, apparently. Unlike the bad press she recently got for making a joke about losing weight on the flu, this offense has slightly more legitimacy. On Thursday, Kim released a new $18 Kimoji candle with her likeness as the Virgin Mary on the front:
The candle is in the style of a vela, which is a very important aspect of Mexican Catholic culture, and folks were quick to point out another case of Kardashian Kultural Appropriation on Twitter:
Not to mention people just generally offended by her posing as the Virgin Mother:
Many people familiar with the candle’s context have also probably seen versions of a vela featuring all kinds of pop culture icons and silly references. Not every candle is sacred, after all. But it is unusual for someone to put their own face on one, and Kim was certainly inviting criticism by doing so. As someone who has a lot of practice dealing with criticism, she probably doesn’t care — and, who knows? There may be a lot of people who would prefer to pray to Kim Kardashian.
