Allison Williams and Lena Dunham Don't Even Know Why Christopher Abbott Left Girls
The actress explains Charlie's surprise return to the HBO series during her #WWHL appearance.
Girls fans almost couldn't believe their eyes when Marnie (briefly) reunited with her ex-boyfriend Charlie on the most recent season of the HBO comedy. And they weren't alone. The actress behind Marnie, Allison Williams, was also pretty shocked to see that Girls star and creator Lena Dunham had written Charlie back into the show.
"I think Lena wrote this episode, and she sent it to me pretty quickly after she finished writing it, and I obviously saw Charlie in it, and I was like, 'OK, here we go,'" the actress revealed on Tuesday's episode of Watch What Happens Live (clip above). "And I think Lena just thought this episode really needs him and let's see if he'll do it."
That hesitation was the result of Christopher Abbott, who played Charlie, deciding to leave the show after two seasons amid rumors that he disliked the series. However, Allison said she doesn't actually know why the actor left Girls. "We've never talked about why he left the show. I don't think he's really talked to Lena about it. He just kind of left," she said, before swearing on her life that she never heard the news of Christopher's departure from the actor himself, just to prove it to Andy Cohen.
Allison's real-life curiosity about the situation even played out on screen. "And so it was very meta, actually, when he came back," she explained on WWHL. "I hadn't talked to him since he left, so I had a lot of questions, but I didn't ask any of them because I wanted them to all exist in the episode."
Allison also had a lot to say about another famous girlfriend during her appearance on WWHL: Katy Perry. Find out how the two met, below.
