Nick Cannon's Reaction to Mariah Carey's New Year's Eve Performance Proves He's the Best Ex Ever

They may not be married, but there's still a lot of love between these former spouses.

It seems like everyone has an opinion on Mariah Carey's New Year's Eve performance fail, from Erika Girardi to Mel B. So the real question is, how could Mimi's ex-husband Nick Cannon not weigh in on the live mishap?

Thankfully, Nick finally shared his take on his ex's New Year's not-so-rockin'-Eve performance during a recent appearance on Ellen. “You know me, I’m a conspiracy theorist. I think the government did that!" he joked to Ellen DeGeneres about what went wrong during the gig. "They set her up! That was a distraction!”

But seriously, Nick said he thought problems with ear pieces could plague anyone's live performance, which Mariah and her team named as the culprit behind the gaffe. "Anyone who knows about performing and having inner-ears, things like that can go wrong on live television,” he said. “I screw up on America’s Got Talent all the time. So when there’s people in your ear saying things and stuff, I think she got a little flustered.”

Singing or not, Nick said Mariah still slayed the performance because she's Mariah, duh. “But being the diva that she is, she said, ‘I’m just going to walk around and pose for 7 minutes,'" he said. “And like Ryan Seacrest said, she can do no wrong. So she worked through it.”

The proof of that could be found in how much the audience loved her performance, even if there really wasn't much performing going on, according to Nick. "They’re like, ‘She’s amazing and her lips aren’t even moving!’" he said.

Nick and Mariah even had a family dinner with their twins, Monroe and Moroccan, a couple of nights after the New Year's Eve debacle. The family was all smiles in the below pic of the evening, which Nick captioned, "All is well! Live! Love! Laugh!" "We got so much love for those two kids right there that we'll do anything for them," Nick told Ellen. "We created a great bond and a friendship because of them."
