Buffie and her husband of 15 years, Dr. David Purselle, announced the happy news during the taping of the Married to Medicine Season 7 reunion on Thursday, November 21. “We’re so excited to become parents,” Buffie told PEOPLE. “A family is something that we have both desperately wanted for so long now. We made our decision and we couldn’t be happier!"

She also couldn't contain her excitement on Instagram. "Surprise!!" Buffie said while announcing her baby news. "We are so excited!!"

Her struggles with fertility have been a major topic of conversation on Married to Medicine this season, including in the most recent episode when Dr. Jackie Walters called Buffie "infertile" while speaking about her own challenges to become a mother during her book cover reveal party.

Buffie has said on Married to Medicine that she has spent more than $200,000 doing everything from trying to conceive naturally to trying intrauterine insemination (IUI) to trying in vitro fertilization (IVF). “We tried and tried, and we were successfully able to get pregnant six times, but unfortunately we had six miscarriages,” Buffie said. “Sadly, it didn’t [stick].”

Buffie told PEOPLE that she and Dr. David had considered surrogacy in the past, but she never went through with it because she wanted to have the experience of carrying her own child. But seeing celebrities like Gabrielle Union, Andy Cohen, and Kandi Burruss be successful with surrogacy changed Buffie's mind. “With their stories, I have hope,” she said, “and I am ready to move forward with this next chapter in our lives.”

The Purselles have five embryos, three boys and two girls, "from years ago," according to Buffie. They are currently in the process of finding the right surrogate through a service recommended by a family member.

Buffie told PEOPLE that confronting her past struggles with fertility this season of Married to Medicine ultimately helped her take action to make that desire to start a family happen. “This has been a tough season and brought up a lot of bad pain, but I always try to look for the good,” she shared. “I feel like it forced me to have a conversation with myself and my husband that I had swept under the rug, and it was something that we both desperately wanted. We’re ready!”

We can't wait to meet Buffie's baby!
