Miley Cyrus & Kaitlynn Carter Broke up, But Are Still Sliding into Each Other’s Instagram Comments
Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter split because things were getting too serious.
One of the biggest couples of Hot Girl Summer has called it quits: Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter are no longer dating.
“[Miley] and Kaitlynn spent every day together and it just wasn’t anything that Miley wanted to continue doing," an anonymous source tattled to PEOPLE. "She wants to focus on her career.”
The two were photographed all boo'd up in Italy just days after each announced their respective splits from their partners in August; Cyrus had separated from actor Liam Hemsworth, who later filed for divorce, and Carter parted ways with Brody Jenner, who she married in a ceremony in Bali (the union was never legalize in America).
After Italy, Cyrus and Carter then took their PDA to the MTV VMAs and throughout Los Angeles, where they were caught by the paparazzi in matching outfits.
But it all might have been too much, too soon.
"When they first got together, it was just a fun casual thing, but it ended up becoming a lot and there were big emotions attached," another nameless source explained to E! News. "It went from 0 to 60 and she wanted to put on the brakes. It was unexpected to end things so abruptly, but it had to be done. She just got out of her marriage and Miley felt like she and Kaitlynn got carried away."
It seemed like we blinked and Cyrus and Carter were an item, like, two minutes after each of them broke up with their men, but Jenner's former friend and current The Hills: New Beginnings antagonist Spencer Pratt claimed Cyrus and Carter were hanging out in a special way for a long time before they went public. We also learned from the show that Carter and Jenner had a polyamorous relationship.
"It’s tough for me to listen to Kaitlynn complain about people talking about her allegedly open relationship with Brody when we know she had a thing going with Miley," Pratt told Cosmopolitan. "She already had something going on with her when these scenes were filming — maybe not physically, but definitely emotionally. No one’s judging you for whatever it is you and Brody do when he’s not sleeping in his car. We just don’t want people to lie about their lives."
Cyrus and Carter appear to now be in the friend zone, but they're still all up in each other's Instagram comments with positive affirmations ("Get it!!!" Carter commented on a picture of Cyrus performing at the iHeartRadio Festival), so perhaps there's hope for these former lovebirds yet.
