Annemarie Wiley Discusses Being a Nurse Anesthetist

In a clip from the RHOBH After Show, above, Annemarie opens up about her career, noting that "a nurse anesthetist is an RN that practices anesthesia and an anesthesiologist is an MD that practice anesthesiology. So we do the same practice. We have the same scope of practice. We just get there on two different paths."

Her BravoTV.com profile adds, "Self-professed Type A personality Annemarie is always on the go. If the fitness fanatic isn’t hitting the gym at 5 a.m., she’s making the rounds for school drop off before heading to work as a registered nurse...  An in-demand nurse anesthetist, Annemarie helps patients at surgical centers throughout the Los Angeles area."

What does a nurse anesthetist do?

According to the Mayo Clinic, "a nurse anesthetist provides pain medication (anesthesia) care for patients before, during, and after surgery. They administer medications to keep patients asleep or pain-free during surgery and constantly monitor every biological function of the patient's body."

Their "scope of practice," according to the website, includes "preparing patients for anesthesia, including physical assessment and preoperative teaching, administering anesthesia to a patient, maintaining anesthesia during an operation, [and] managing recovery from anesthesia."

It's also noted that "nurse anesthetists work with anesthesiologists, doctors, and surgeons to provide anesthetics to patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly."

Nurse anesthetist vs anesthesiologist explained

The Mayo clinic website adds, "Both nurse anesthetist and anesthesiologists administer anesthesia to patients, but their educational and career paths differ: a nurse anesthetist is an advanced nurse with a nursing educational and professional background, while anesthesiologist are doctors with a medical school and residency training background."
