Kandi Burruss Says Mama Joyce Gave Her This Financial Advice While Growing Up
The RHOA cast member credits her mom for her entrepreneurial spirit.
Kandi Burruss learned at an early age to never “skip a beat or a bag.”
The Real Housewives of Atlanta mom confirmed this during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where she discussed her recent string of career wins and ever-growing business empire. Kandi told the outlet she had adopted an entrepreneurial mindset years before she became a household name, and it was thanks in large part to her mother, Mama Joyce.
Mama Joyce's Advice
“I’ve always been pretty good at maintaining money,” she revealed. “My mom always told me, ‘Hey, you got to have multiple sources of income.’ … So my goal was to not be one of those stories you hear about child stars who end up being broke. That was always a fear for me.”
Needless to say, Kandi heeded the advice. Since entering the music industry at age 15, Kandi has established herself as a full-fledged multi-hyphenate. In addition to her singing career, the mother of three has found success in a wide range of business sectors, including everything from restaurants and apparel to cosmetics and sex toys. However, it’s her work in entertainment that has garnered the most praise.
Kandi's Recent Nominations
It was less than a week ago when Kandi scored a Southeast Emmy nomination for the TV series La Musica de La Familia and a Tony Award nomination for the hit Broadway show The Piano Lesson. The nods marked a milestone moment for the Grammy-winner who is now two steps closer to EGOT status.
“I’ve been telling everybody for years now that I’m going to get the EGOT,” she continued. “But I know half the people that I said it to were like, ‘Yeah, OK, girl, whatever.’ Now it’s a real thing. I feel like all the praying, all the angels up there that have been working for me — it’s just all coming together ...”
Although Kandi described the experience as “kind of overwhelming,” she refuses to take her foot off the gas pedal. Kandi confirmed she and her husband, Todd Tucker, are working on the Broadway revival of The Wiz, and have several movie and music projects on deck. The Georgia native will also return to the small screen for RHOA Season 15, which premieres May 7 on Bravo.
So, what’s Kandi’s next big goal? It's surprisingly non-business-related.
“I definitely want to do better about finding the balance of being home more for my family,” she told THR. “And that is such a topic, right? I mean, I have mom guilt just like everybody else. So I definitely want to do better at finding balance.”
