The Real Housewives of Orange County's Heather Dubrow's daughter, Kat Dubrow, confirmed in an interview with PEOPLE that she is a lesbian. Kat and Heather opened up about her coming out in an interview published this week, with the RHOC daughter sharing her story nearly two years after her older sister, Max, came out as bisexual during Pride Month in 2020.

How to Watch

Watch The Real Housewives of Orange County on Thursdays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock. Catch up on the Bravo App.

"We've got four kids, they are different genders, different sexualities, and all at interesting places in their lives, figuring out who they are and where they belong as humans," Heather told PEOPLE. Heather added that she and her family hope their experience can be a platform for other families: "I felt like our purpose is to keep those conversations going in other families."

Dr. Terry Dubrow added to the publication: "Coming out with your sexuality is something that broadly affects a lot of different people. We just want people to realize it should be part of normal conversations."

Kat, 15, shared that she came out to her family nearly a year ago, and she opened up about what it feels like to now be so public about it. "I was really stressed about it," she said. "But I'm really grateful that I have Max as an older sister, that she has already gone through all of this. Seeing my sister be so proud, and to see her be so comfortable with herself, it just makes me feel like I have nothing to worry about."

Heather also shared how Kat opened up about her sexual identity to her family after she "had been talking about her sexuality for a while." "Kat decided to drop in our family group text, 'By the way, I'm a lesbian,' " Heather recalls. "I didn't see it, and I was mad because the dogs pooped in the house, so I wrote back, 'Who let the dogs poop in the house?' It was a total mom fail, and they've never let me forget that. All I cared about was creating an environment where they all felt safe, comfortable, happy."

Max, 18, shared that "even if she [Heather] doesn't understand something, my mom tries very hard and she learns and teaches herself and she grows with us," with Kat adding, "She's asked me trillions of questions that really show she cares. She's asked me about my pronouns. It's really easy to talk to her. It's not like I have to build up courage if I have something to tell her."

Previously Heather opened up about Max's journey in a Q&A session with Bravo fans, sharing that she felt "love, happy" when Max shared the news about her sexuality, adding, "I wasn't surprised. We didn't care. I was like 'great, that's amazing. Love you. Awesome," Heather said.

Heather took to Twitter after the PEOPLE interview was published to show her support for all her children: Max, Kat, Collette, and Nicholas. "SO PROUD OF MY KIDS!" she wrote on Tuesday (February 8).

Heather reflected on sharing her family's story in a post shared to Instagram on Wednesday (February 9), writing, "We are so proud to show what our version of a 'normal' family looks like today. It’s really important that we provide an environment of unconditional love and acceptance for our children and let them know that humans come in all different colors, genders, sexualities. Once we start appreciating this and practicing inclusion, love and acceptance, the better off we will all be. We hope that by sharing our story we are starting conversations in other homes and hopefully helping people."
