Ruth Reichl Inks Deal for First Novel
The Top Chef critic is penning fiction tome Delicious!
Ruth Reichl has donned many foodie hats over her illustrious career—newspaper food critic, magazine editor, best-selling memoirist and (arguably her greatest claim to fame!) a judge on Top Chef Masters.
And now the 65 year-old food maven can affix another hyphen to her name: novelist. Random House announced Tuesday that it had acquired "Delicious!"— her very first foray into fiction writing. The book is set to be published in May 2014.
The story, not surprisingly, is set in the food world and concerns "a young woman who discovers a cache of secret letters written by a girl during World War II and, inspired by them, finally comes to terms with her own family's tragedy," the publisher said in a statement.
As for her first attempt at writing fiction, Reichl explains, "I'm addicted to fiction, and I've always wanted to write a novel." And she's got a vote of confidence too: Random House has also signed on for two more novels by our esteemed judge. Maybe the next one will take place on the set of a certain cooking competition? We'll have to wait and see!
