Ryan Gosling Finally Explains Why He Laughed Through That Whole Oscars Best Picture Mishap
It was because something else didn't happen.
When Moonlight was correctly named Best Picture at this year's Oscars ceremony after La La Land was at first erroneously given the title, all of Hollywood and the world reacted with a wide range of emotions. But it was the photo of Ryan Gosling's seeming attempt to stifle his laughter while onstage with the La La Land team that really caused a stir.
Ryan finally explained his giggles heard 'round the Internet during a conversation with Adobe CMO Ann Lewnes at the Adobe Summit in Las Vegas on Wednesday. “What really was happening as I was watching, it was surreal anyway, I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt,” he said, as reported by PEOPLE. “I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head. And then I just heard Moonlight won and I was so relieved that I started laughing.”
Well, there you have it. Instead of letting out a sigh of relief like us mere mortals, Ryan lets out a laugh like the super-human being that he is. Wherever Ryan goes, memes seem to follow (um, Feminist Ryan Gosling, anyone?), and his reaction to the Best Picture snafu promptly took the Internet by storm.
Ryan was genuinely happy when he realized that Moonlight had won Best Picture, too. “Truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won. I know the director [Barry Jenkins] … I’ve worked with them before,” he said at the Adobe Summit. “It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, and incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognized.”
Oh, Ryan Gosling. You are a class act. And a cheery one at that.
