Steve recently opened up to Us Weekly about all of the criticism he and his girlfriend have received online since sharing their happy news. “There’s always people with negativity and they just like to spread it through social media because they have a shield of anonymity,” he said. “I chose to go on TV and show my life — that was my decision. I understood what that meant for my life. People are going to comment on me, how I look, this or that, good, bad — I know it just comes with the territory.”
He noted that the majority of the negative comments have to do with the couple's physical appearance and age difference (Steve is 34, and Luiza is 26). “[Trolls] never really bothered me until it was affecting someone close to me. That’s when it all changed. I realized how serious it is,” Steve said. “I probably share less now, but mainly because I want to protect Luiza and people in my life. There’s no reason for her to have to be subject to this negativity or people saying things about her. We have something amazing going on. To have all these negative influences trying to destroy something that’s so beautiful … it’s sad.”
Luiza also told Us Weekly that it's been difficult to tune out the critics, even though the couple has received lots of love and support from fans, too. "I always wanted to be private and I thought there would be no need to change it ever, even if I would be with Steve. But obviously people are very curious," she said. "Sometimes I’m just shocked that people can [comment], because they don’t even know me.”
Steve and Luiza met in August 2018 while at the airport waiting to board a flight to London. They then had their first date in London, where Luiza is from originally, and then met up again in Monte Carlo and Ibiza.
The couple moved in together in New York City in February, and Steve admitted things are "moving quickly" between them. “I couldn’t expect falling in love with someone from another country, moving in together, having our little family,” he gushed to Us Weekly. “I think I’m more myself with her than I am by myself, if that makes sense. I become who I used to be as a kid, more fun-loving.”
