Though it seems like just yesterday that Teresa Giudice was dropping off her eldest daughter, Gia Giudice, at college for the first time, the 21-year-old is actually about to start her junior year at Rutgers University. Ahead of her daughter’s return to school, The Real Housewives of New Jersey mom is sharing a new update on Gia’s life in college.

“Gia did great this year," Teresa said of her daughter's sophomore year in a recent interview with PEOPLE. “She met so many people and made so many friends."

The proud mom went on to explain that while she’s “always going to worry” about her daughter while she’s away, the two have maintained their tight-knit relationship. "I would check in with her all the time," she said of keeping up communication while Gia’s on campus. "She would always check in with me, because she's that type of kid."

How to Watch

Watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 14 premiere May 5th at 8/9c on Bravo and stream next day on Peacock.

The mother-daughter duo also enjoy regular visits to each other.  “Gia is only 45 minutes away. Whenever she could, she would come home, and it was great. She would come home for Sunday dinners,” Teresa told PEOPLE.

Earlier this year, Gia opened up about her plans to become a lawyer while appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “I'm still pursuing my dream of becoming a lawyer, so that's really exciting for me. I've definitely been getting a lot of more promotional deals and just hanging out with friends and family. I've been enjoying life," she told host Andy Cohen in the May 9 episode.

Gia also shared how her parents’ legal issues have impacted her decision to study law. “Their whole experience influenced me, honestly, for the better,” she said. “I just want to help families and be able to be there for families and help children, honestly, especially."
