America Ferrera Wants to Bring Back Ugly Betty — Possibly as a Movie
"The more our fans want it and make noise about it, the more likely it is," the actress shared on #WWHL.
Betty Suarez and her over-the-top MODE magazine family came into our lives 10 years ago when Ugly Betty first premiered. We're not just bringing up that fact as a daily reminder that we're all getting old (although it is one). We're wondering if it's time for an Ugly Betty revival to happen, since it seems like so many beloved TV shows are returning for new movies, limited series, and even whole seasons these days.
Well, Ugly Betty fans may be able to rejoice, because the series' star herself, America Ferrera, revealed that a future movie is a possibility when she appeared on Watch What Happens Live Thursday night (clip above). "That is a conversation that’s happening," she said. "We had an Ugly Betty reunion at the ATX Austin TV Festival and we sort of started a hashtag #HuluBringBackUglyBetty, which I think kind of made Hulu mad, but who cares. It’s always been a conversation and our fans, thank you so much."
A good sign is that nearly the entire Ugly Betty cast reunited for a panel at that event, which took place in Austin, Texas in June, including America (Betty), Vanessa Williams, (Wilhelmina), Eric Mabius (Daniel), Michael Urie (Marc), Tony Plana (Ignacio), Ana Ortiz (Hilda), Mark Indelicato (Justin), Rebecca Romijn (Alexis), Ashley Jensen (Christina), and Judith Light (Claire), according to Entertainment Weekly. Becki Newton, who played Amanda on the show, was unable to attend after coming down with pneumonia, she shared on Twitter at the time.
Showrunner Silvio Horta also didn't rule out the possibility of an Ugly Betty revival during the reunion saying, “Here’s the only thing I know for sure — if we were to do something, it would be a dream, but everybody on this stage would have to be involved," as reported by Variety in June.
In fact, Ugly Betty fans might have a hand in making this Ugly Betty movie become a reality. "The more our fans want it and make noise about it, the more likely it is, so keep it up!" America, who currently stars in the NBC comedy Superstore, gushed on WWHL.
While we keep our fingers crossed for more Ugly Betty in the future, watch America express her love for Bette Midler on WWHL, below.
