Malia White Calls Captain Sandy Yawn’s Reaction "Brutal"

Following her most intense interaction with Captain Sandy Yawn ever, Malia White reflected on the latest Below Deck Mediterranean drama on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

During her virtual appearance in the Bravo Clubhouse on September 27, the bosun admitted that she was "a little bit" surprised at Captain Sandy's reaction to not immediately being informed of David Pascoe's injury, which was featured in the September 20 and September 27 episodes of Below Deck Med. "I think it was a pretty brutal reaction for, you know, everything that happened," Malia said on WWHL (clip above).

Host Andy Cohen then asked Malia how she felt hearing Captain Sandy say that she couldn't trust her after the incident was not reported. "That was pretty shocking to me. I didn't think that, you know, not reporting it right away was, like, a merit for not trusting someone. David and I never intended to hide it from her," Malia said, adding that "it was one big misunderstanding."

Captain Sandy explained her reaction to later finding out about David's injury in an interview on Below Deck Med. "Learning about David's injury really pisses me off. Not reporting this is a safety issue. What happens is the crew member becomes a liability to the vessel and to the owner. They have to be physically fit to be able to perform their duty, especially on deck," she said. "The fact that Malia knew about his injury is not OK with me. She broke my trust."

In the episode, Malia told Captain Sandy that she felt like she followed the correct procedure after David got hurt. "I did my part of it where I asked him, 'Do you need to see a doctor? Is it serious?' I'm not a chief officer," she told the Below Deck Med boss, later noting that the incident also did not take place during work hours.

Malia answered a fan question on WWHL that asked if she was just "making excuses" in that moment. "Uh, maybe a little bit, but I think it was more, you know, I was trying to get to the reason why we hadn't reported it," she said. "It happened on, like, a day off. Like, three days later is when we're getting in trouble for this."

Captain Sandy previously addressed her confrontation with Malia when it teased in the Below Deck Med Season 6 trailer prior to the season premiere in June. "You know, I always share this, leaders lead and sometimes they lose their temper, right? So, that’s in every position in leadership. You lose your temper," Captain Sandy told The Daily Dish at the time. "When people don’t take responsibility, that’s what makes me angry. It’s like, just own it. And when you own it, I’m not gonna get mad ‘cause you’re owning your mistake. But when you try to push it off, that pisses me off."

Malia opens up more about this and another tense moment with Captain Sandy this season of Below Deck Med in an exclusive interview with Bravo Insider.

These two also clashed a little bit earlier this season when Captain Sandy felt like Malia was covering for David after he forgot to put the plugs in the jet ski, which had started to malfunction while the charter guests were riding it. During Monday's WWHL After Show, David shared what it was like to see Malia get into some trouble with Captain Sandy over his mistake. "Like with all these things, I'd much rather taken the stick myself than Malia or any of the deck team take stick for something that was my error," he said in the below clip. "I would say that I appreciate that she did."
