How Did Bill Barr's Testimony on the Mueller Report Become a KFC Meme?
KFC fried chicken buckets have made recurring cameos throughout the Donald Trump presidency.
Never mind that Attorney General Bill Barr's testimony on the Mueller Report relates to one of the most pressing political matters of our time: It's also just become a meme about fried chicken. How?
Well, to recap, Barr was originally intended to show up at a (Democrat-led) House hearing today, after fiery testimony yesterday in the (Republican-led) Senate. Instead, he refused to show. And Democrats thought that made him something of a — see where this is going? — chicken.
Today, the House convened the hearing anyway, with Barr absent and an empty chair where he had been scheduled to be. Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen arrived to the hearing in the morning with a bucket of KFC chicken to make a point about Barr. He ate a piece while cameras snapped wildly — lest the point be missed in the media.
But given that it was 9 a.m. and the food was meant to make a point rather than serve as an actual meal, the congressman's offering eventually made its way to the witness table — alongside a chicken figurine.
You might say that KFC has become an unexpectedly central character in the Donald Trump presidency.
He famously lit up Twitter after he posted an Instagram of himself enjoying a bucket of KFC on his private plane... and eating it in a most curious fashion.
