At Bush Sr.'s Funeral, George W. Reprises a Viral Gesture of Love: Passing Candy to Michelle Obama
At George H.W. Bush's funeral, his son repeated a small act from John McCain's funeral that moved so many.
All eyes were on former Oval Office occupants of both political parties earlier this year when they gathered somberly to honor John McCain at the war hero's funeral. That's when former president George W. Bush could be seen on camera offering Michelle Obama a piece of candy — a small, warm gesture that went viral, perhaps for the symbol of compassionate bipartisanship it seemed to represent in a country starved for it.
Today, at his own father's funeral, Bush reprised that moving gesture, offering the former first lady another piece of candy. While the younger president Bush was greeting his predecessors and successors in the first row at the National Cathedral, where they had all assembled to honor the late George H.W. Bush, he appeared to remove a piece of candy from his pocket and slip it over to Mrs. Obama, according to People.
“[President Bush] is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the formers gather," Mrs. Obama told TODAY in October. "So we’re together all the time, and I love him to death. He’s a wonderful man. He’s a funny man."
