Oscar, You Shouldn't Have

Rodger Berman reflects on Oscar Week with Rachel Zoe.

I have to admit, the last episode was hard for me to watch. Being in the house during Oscar week was pure hell. Every year, I threaten to leave for the week leading up to the Oscars and every year Rachel persuades me to stay because she "needs my support." It used to be fun when we'd actually go to the parties the week leading up to and after the Oscars. But for the past several years, Rachel has been too busy before the awards, and afterwards too spent, to go to anything. So, I basically get all the craziness, attitude and chaos in the house without any of the benefits. Sounds like I'm married.

While it may seem crazy to an outsider (or even an insider) that everyone gets so worked up, the Oscars is really the annual pinnacle for Rachel and some could argue for fashion in general. On top of the pressures of working under tight deadlines to find the perfect look, one thing I'd like to highlight that doesn't come through in this episode is the huge amount of pressure and politics that happen from the designers (publicists) for placement.

Each year, Rachel is offered (and declines) cash, trips, gifts etc. and is literally stalked so that she can "make sure" a certain dress, jewel or shoe is on a client. In the designer successfully gets placement, the exposure and subsequent sales that are generated amount to literally millions of dollars. Entire teams converge in LA with the sole purpose (no pun intended) of getting their items on A-list actors/actresses.

So, on top of the intense pressure of making the perfect look, navigating the politics with designers and their publicists (many of them close friends to Rachel) only adds to the overall pressure of the Oscars. Since this is the last episode, and hence last blog, I wanted to thank everyone for watching the show and also being involved online. Thanks for the great comments - especially everyone who wrote that I'm the perfect husband. I tried to solidify my title this episode with the Porsche. I think it might have worked. As of today, we really have no idea if we'll be back but we all hope we will be (except Taylor of course, but she'll come around...she always does).
