Why NeNe and Gregg Leakes Are Keeping Miracle Fruit Trees in Their Home

The Real Housewives of Atlanta wife is bringing the so-called "miracle berries" into her home.

By Patricia Cunningham

Last night on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, NeNe Leakes and her husband, Gregg, opened up about what they’re doing to help Gregg recover from cancer treatment and stay healthy. One of those ways included bringing Miracle Fruit Trees into their home. “I’m here to do whatever I can to make Gregg heal,” NeNe acknowledged, noting that Toni Braxton’s holistic specialist had recommended the tree (she also mentioned it on her Twitter account). “If somebody tells me I need to buy trees, I buy the whole damn forest.”

How to Watch

Watch The Real Housewives of Atlanta on Peacock and the Bravo App.

So just what are these mysterious trees and what sort of healing properties might they possess? The Miracle Fruit Tree is an evergreen shrub native to West Africa. It produces a unique berry that when eaten makes everything you eat afterward taste sweet. This is due to a protein contained in the fruit pulp called miraculin that binds to taste buds and alters natural flavors. Not only have these so-called “miracle berries” been shown to help dieters overcome sugar cravings, they can also help cancer patients by masking the metallic taste food can get after chemotherapy and radiation, preventing weight loss and nausea. So, by restoring Gregg's taste for food and his appetite, the Miracle Fruit tree could very well help him stay on the road to health.
