Cary Deuber: I Just Don’t Have The Same Hangups About Nudity
" I feel good enough about myself to be comfortable in my skin (and nothing else)."
Welcome back to Denmark, friends!
Overall, we had a great Day 3. We initially split into two groups: the boat group and the bicycle group. It was so much fun exploring Copenhagen and goofing around on two wheels. But the fun wasn’t over yet!
Costumes, anyone?! You know how we love a good reason to dress up, so we all got into our Danish girl costumes to head over to Tivoli. I remember visiting Tivoli 25 years ago, and I have to admit that it was SO much more fun doing this again with my Dallas girls. Afterward, I feel like we finally got to put the “alcoholic” thing to bed. I think we can all agree no one in the group is an alcoholic. Let’s just leave it at that.
While Tivoli was great, the highlight of the whole trip for me was the family reunion in Dragör at my cousin Lotte’s house on Day 4! My cousin Ulla actually trained in over three hours from Horsens, the town my grandfather was originally from just to see us. But that’s nothing compared to the SURPRISE trip that Mark and Zuri made. The two of them emerging from the house brought us all to tears. We were all balling! It has to be one of the sweetest moments of my life. I still can’t believe he was able to keep that a secret from me. He didn’t even tell Zuri about it until the morning they left so that she wouldn’t spill the secret!
We all had a lovely family reunion lunch. Pickled herring was actually a super small part of it, almost a joke. There was actual real food, and it was really, really good. I love how thoughtful Mark can be. He video called my dad, and we had the true family connection moment that I hoped for. It truly bears repeating that in my heart, I had just about all of the people in the world that matter to me either physically there or there via FaceTime in Denmark. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to express just how special it was to me! I’ll cherish that moment for the rest of my life, and I’ll forever be grateful.
Then we were off to the Baltic Sea! The water temperature was something like 48 degrees and the air was even colder! It was jarringly, painfully cold. But Mark and I did the ultimate family connection thing and took the Nordic plunge! In fact, we did it multiple times; first just to experience it before we knew if we could meet in the middle from the two separated piers we were on. (Sorry to all of my girlfriends for the TMI, but who knows when the next opportunity Mark and I were going to have to experience something like that.) And, like I always say, given the chance for unique life experiences, we’re always gonna go for it!
Frankly, I’m gonna have to let the whole “LeeAnne filmed us” thing go. Obviously it’s not lost on me that there was a film crew with us in Copenhagen recording our activities…so what’s an extra iPhone? Not to mention I deleted the video off of LeeAnne’s iPhone myself. Maybe I’ll never quite get it since (as we all know) I just don’t have the same hangups about nudity anyway. I feel good enough about myself to be comfortable in my skin (and nothing else). If there’s video out there, and evil intent behind it, I’m gonna have to live with my choices. And, most importantly, I'm gonna put my trust in LeeAnne as a changed friend that she’s going to do the right thing. Isn’t that the basis for real, meaningful friendships—trust? It’s as simple as that.
Before I get to part ways with my girls and spend a couple of days with Mark and Zuri, there’s one more crazy dinner I’ll have to endure. Thank God Mark changed my return date so that we could explore Copenhagen some more. I think the fun family time will be a welcome reprieve from what’s up next…
