Mary has resided in the Utah house with her family for nearly two decades. "We moved in when [my son] Robert was two days old," she explained in an interview. "I just wrapped him up and moved into the house. That's a long time. My son's 18."

As she explained on the show's September 12 episode, Mary spent six months of 2020 at the house without her husband, Robert Sr., because he got "got stuck in Florida and he was too afraid to fly home." (In addition to their Utah home, the couple owns houses in Florida, New York, Indiana, and Nevada) Although her son was home with her, Mary admitted, "It's not like my son sits down and wants to talk to me. He's a teenager."

Therefore, Mary had plenty of time to think about a redesign. "I spent the entire pandemic looking at my house and being trapped in it," she said in the clip above. "It was like a marriage: Everything's stale."

Mary and her contractor, her cousin "Big Joe," quickly got to work on planning the transformation, starting with a fireplace. "I want to take this down," she said as she looked at marble samples. "This is all great, this crown molding is all beautiful, but who's cleaning it?"
