This is War War War

"I am actually trying to help these people, so-called interns who want a job in fashion."

February 8, 2010

I do not employ these people in the intern room and I do not want to receive one more e-mail about my hiring skills because I am actually trying to help these people, so-called interns who want a job in fashion. The bad news is their uber-rich parents think they are thriving as they move toward their Communications degree, but the reality of it on reality TV is that they cannot spell financial and they cannot put tissue paper in a bag or put a label on a parcel – what the Kell am I supposed to do?

As I have never majored in business, I resort to toddler-care tactics and pagan prayers by giving the interns a time-out, sending them onto the streets of New York as I light sacred seven sisters healing stones I purchased from my last pow-wow. Sure, Andrew Mukamal is choking but hey, he wears a belt as a necklace – did you see that? OMG LMAO.

P.S. Andrew Serrano AKA Tandrew – no sleeping on our hardwood floors. WTF?

It was rather interesting for me to read the article. Thank author for it. I like such topics and anything that is connected to this matter. I definitely want to read more on this blog soon. By the way, rather good design your blog has, but don’t you think design should be changed from time to time?

Hi Kelly!!!! YOU ARE SIMPLY F A B U L O U S !!!!!!!

Seriously. You say the smartest things.

Keep up the genius and the show....Season 2????

XO

What a great show.I look forward to watching it over and over again each time.Love it.

Hi Kelly,
I really enjoy watching you on Bravo, and I was wondering if you would ever consider hiring someone who is in their 30s, someone whose experience could add more value to your company, and hopefully more productivity, and no babysitting or spell-check required.

xoxoxox

Kelly,

I think you rock!! :) Love the show and what you do!! Don't ever change. From the previews, it looks like your gonna give the right people the ax. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes. I wanna be your facebook friend! :) {Hugs}

organize your workplace--it reflects poorly on you and your company....
Hire someone to come in and organize your work space.... chaos,,,,
u think it looks busy and professional.... activity = achievement (not on UR show)
no wonder those interns can't find anything or get anything done---
itz ur job to get ur office organized or have it done but you seem content to operate in a totally chaotic manner.... what the KELL?

Kel-U ROCK! What a great example of a mother & business woman!! U are my HERO!!!
XO

I'm not into fashion but watching your show that was something. And now im creating a fashion statement at the office.I really love your show keept it up.

kell

love your show, keep it up!

What a great mama! What a great business woman! So real! Strong women..may we be them..may we raise them! Thanks for sharing yourself, your passions and your family with the world!!

I love your show. I don't know who is harder to deal with the egomaniac designers or the interns. You seem like a straight forward, hardworking person. Luv ya!!

Kelly.....I am blown away weekly (and not just from your show) by the inability of young people to get things right. Please already...learn to spell, pay attention to detail, be on time, learn to follow direction. IT'S SO EASY.

Kelly, I am a 48-year-old mom with a few college degrees, I know NOTHING about fashion, but I could SO work for you. I mean, a white bag with names written on it with a black Sharpie. Can't these kids see how crappy and unprofessional that looks??

Make me an intern and I will show them how it's done!!!!! I'm serious, by the way. Oh, and I love how incredible you are with Ava!!! I have daughters that age, as well as college age. Best of luck Kelly, you are MY NEW HERO!!!

The thing I appreciate about watching you Kelly is that you are a human who is simply a genius at what you have passion for. You line up with it, live it and roll with it showing up for all the moments of it with humor, anger, whatever emotion. No mystery, no riddle. I love watching genius unfold. Jack Kornfield wrote a book, "after the ecstacy the laundry", and you just live it...blended.

Sincerely,
HUGE FAN OF REAL HUMANS! :)

Ter

In defense of young people across America I would like to state that your interns are not a proper representation of whats out there!! Just because some are book smart doesn't mean they are common sense smart... I feel that sometimes life experiences make you better and divided the ones that are serious and passionate about what they want to do from those who are just there to say they are doing something. I would be honored to work a single fashion week with you and if you are in the market for a potential intern with common sense and book smarts feel free to contact me :)

I would first like to say that I enjoy the fast ride that your show is every week. On the subject of the management of the staff, I would definitely give the overall grade a D. The grade is because I am an educator, and that's how I am trained to think. The interns are causing more problems that they are worth. Definitely get rid of them, or demote Stephanie V. to "Lead Intern." She would be able to grow with them. She doesn't deserve an actual leadership position for a long time. Her work must always be checked before it leaves the office. I do hope that is a new policy. Additionally, when our school embarks on large endeavors equal to what a fashion show is to your business, there is a paper trail for all the people involve to encourage follow through. Finally, an office that was streamlined, organized, and less chaotic would definitely improve the work habits for all the employees, including you. It is difficult to concentrate in a disorganized office, no matter how much incense is burned. I morning "status" meeting with the key people to check the timeline would be a good idea, too.
I don't work in the fashion business, just in a school in Clarksville, TN where organization makes me very successful at my job as an academic coach.

Kel:

I think you're terrific. But why do all the women who work for you end up talking like you? Same cadence and 'tude and everything. Please stop them!!

thanks for keeping it so 'real' - always ready to watch how you are able to juggle being a mom and running an AMAZING firm. You rock!

Kelly - your show is my new addiction!! I no longer have to suffer through that other 'show' to hear you tell like it is:) Loved the bags in ep. 2...as a business graduate and someone who has worked with the public in various positions, I laughed my ass off when you saw the bags w/ the handwritten labels. I am so type A, that I went off on those poor interns from my own living room!!! And the looks on their faces were priceless, and unfortunately, a look that I recognize. Sort of like "well what am I supposed to do about it?"...awwwww...stupidity. And as was pointed out in a previous comment, the HUGE gaping hole of no common sense or logic!

Kell you have it going on, for sure. You have a big heart and you have to be stern and honest and tell it like it is in your business or you would not be in business. When people work for you they have to know that that industry will eat you up and spit you out. People are standing in line w/numbers in their hand like the deli down the street waiting for a chance to work in your industry. Awesome how you live so close to your own home and be there for your daughter. :)

As everyone else has stated, Kelly, your show is amazing and real!! I mean, a real reality show. How refreshing. I wish these kinds of intern opportunities were available when I was growing up (I'm now 55), because it would have been a chance of a lifetime, to work with someone like you in the PR business. These young interns that are on your show are a huge disappointment. I found it especially funny when they showed the gift bag that was labeled "fincial." Scary, but they aren't the only ones who are coming out of college and can't spell...

Kell, Thanks so much for educating the public on what Haute Couture is in your first show. When I heard that I jumped up and yelled...YES! Then I said...FINALLY. Thanks for clearing it up...it has nothing to do with ready to wear. It is a title given by the Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Paris. May the fashion gods bless you and your staff!

Kell on Earth...
I think you are cool as H(e)llEarth. You are sarcastic w/o being (too) mean, smart w/o being dumb, cool w/o being icy .... a tough, go-getter, but fun. Boss or not, people will learn from you. I love your 'tude and wish you and your business, fam, the best! xo, NOLA on on Earth!

I've never seen your show, but based on this blog, I'm going to have to start watching.. you're hilarious. Communication-majoring kids who can't spell -- YES!! So funny but true.

I would have killed for the opportunity to work at a company like this. I've always been frustrated because the average person accepts such mediocre work from themselves and others. SOME of these interns are just not using any brain cells and don't realize why they don't bust their butt for the opportunity they have been given. I'm 44 now and still expect a high level of work from my co-workers and rarely get it. Love the show. Need an assistant in California? Just kidding.

I would fit in well at your company! Why are young people so out-of-touch with reality? What happened to using your brain. Are these people seriously college grads? I would have sent every one of them packing after the bag debacle. Love the show!!

Dear Kell,

You have assembled a great mgmt team who all possess the specialized knowledge and intuition of your ways of beingness and know precisely how you expect tasks to be completed to your satisfaction.

However, the "interns" are flying blind. Unless they have a crystal ball not shown on the show, how are they to discern - step-by-step, with your laser-like precision - how are they to successfully proceed with each specific task that you have customized with your unique stamp from years creating your own business?

What I have observed so far (and makes me call out to you when watching the episodes on TV) are the following observations, and what I would do to correct the situation were I in your shoes. Feel free to take it or leave it as you wish: I just ask you to read it through, and ask yourself if any of these suggestions would add value to your business and improve your businesses systemic processes for the better.

1) In the episode where the RSVP list for the Client blew up, and would not print out correctly, that situation told me that too many people had touched the file, and one of them screwed up the file format; at Bryant Park, instead of using paper to check in guests, it would have been easier to look up RSVPs using the search function on laptops than on funky lists missing fields of data, however you stated your co. only had six laptops in total.

2) After the computer systems balked at a critical moment, I would hire an on-site or on-call IT person to assess your overall computer/printer/laptop situation, see if a server might help centralize issues, and start moving to a paperless process system (as folks in Silicon Valley have done over the last decade). Also having an IT person on site might have saved the list in time to save that show you were fired from;

3) I would have more business-oriented people on your staff, or mix it up better with design folk.

4) I would hire a Senior Technical Writer/Analyst to pick the brains of you and your partners of every task that you all currently carry in your heads. This is due to the fact your mgmt team does not take the 5-15 minutes up front to train the interns in each step they must take to complete each assignment successfully;

5)I would be willing to hire enthusiastic, dedicated, and hungry for success (meaning those who aren't silver spoon privileged do nothings who don't have to creat results because they have a trust fund to back them in life). Meaning young people from college or non-college backgrounds who want the chance to prove themselves able to you and your partners.

Peace and Love,

Dian Marshall Smith

I may be stating the obvious -- why don't you just hire interns who are actually smart rather than pandering to the children of the "uber-rich"?

Ms. Cutrone, you are fabulous. I love the fact that you really "keep it real" on the business front, put up with all the fashion industry diva junque, and still make time for your daughter and mentoring people. The fact that you were willing to chat with that guy's mother shows that you truly have a great heart for people. You are the genuine article!!!

Kell, I loved your show and I left a comment for Stef and I'll post it here for you as well, She's got the best job in the world and I offered to take a week or two off vacation time to be her assistant free of charge. If you ever need any help I'm an e-mail away and I'll show those interns what the industry is about.

OMGosh I feel your pain, but I love watching your life. Your daughter is adorable. We single moms, feel guilty at work, feel guilty at home. Looks like you've done a fantastic job at balancing both, and being a good role model for your daughter.

May I just say that you effing rock! What those interns did was admonishable on so many levels. I understand that they're young, but come on!!! Does being born with a silver spoon in your mouth some how distort basic problem solving skills? Aside from the fact that it looked like your 7-year-old wrote out the labels, it would have been easier and much more efficient to have labels made. Everyone who has responded to this blog is entirely correct - it would be an honor to work in your office...so why so much ill attention to detail? Stefanie Skinner, on the other hand, seems to have weathered the storm this class of interns probably won't be able to. She seems pretty tough regardless of the fact that she cried in the office. Don't let her go anywhere!

Kell,
Congrats on a great reality show!.
Two questions??
1. Has anyone ever told you , you look a lot!
like K.D. Lang?
2. How do you feel about hearing the news of Lee McQueen death?
Looking forward to the next episode.
<3

Your show reminds me so much of Absolutely Fabulous. The publicist frenetically running around and yet placating the designer, "They love you, they do." "Well I don't, I hate them;" The obsession with youth and another era (80s punk vs 60's hippie nostalgia); an incompetent assistant-that Voorhees disaster; right down to a model getting injured by a hanging light installation (Patsy when she scars herself "for life behind each ear." Love it.

You may have told us on the show.. but how did you get started designing fashion shows? What big designer gave you your first big break? I'm in retail and have a cake job, unlike yours, but there is huge stress in this industry. How do you relieve stress? I enjoyed getting the behind the scenes look at the construction of a runway show. LOL I feel like a newspaper reporter, but I love to see how different people find their passion.

Kelly, you are so awsome! I just love how you show your true colors your not trying to be fake or consider feelings because in this world you have to be able to let someone know when they are in the wrong! It is time for America's children and famous to learn that you have to stand up and work for success you might get knocked down a few times but you have to get up again and go for it. Once you make it you have to try even harder to keep it and you cant let anyone mess it up. Its also great to see how you show team the good, the bad, and the ugly. Talking to the interns mom was nice because like you said not very many people would even acknowlegde the intern.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!! If the cost of living wasn't so high there, I would camp out at your door and beg for a job! LOL

You are my Auntie...in my head. I love You!

Kelly, the people who work for you should consider themselves LUCKY!!! I had a similar internship fresh out of college and I will say that it was THE best work experience of my life. If every intern/employee was held to similar high standards we would not have the mass of mediocrity that has become acceptable in the workforce.

It's funny that many of the "kelly-isms" you share are the same as those that we lived by at our office. Keep out the good work YOU ARE AWSOME!

Wow everyone loves Kelly no haters now that is refreshing.
I like the show as well and the fact that you do speak your mind. It is great that you can say what you want without worrying about the consequences. There is such a thing as cause and effect which means what we think, say and do equals the end result. "winter always turns to spring"
another words nothing ever stays the same. Winter has never changed back to autumn. I think you are an attractive, strong woman who has many nice qualities. I would date you, but I am sure you must have a man?

Love your show. You may look though, you are so real, loving, caring person. I will be so happy to working for you. Your daughter is so cute, you are encridable mother to her.

I cannot for the life of me, understand why you don't hire one or two professional secretaries or executive assistants who could do these clerical tasks in their sleep! Is it because you are trying to save money on cheap labor?

I have really enjoyed watching your show! My favorite part of every show is when you're yelling at people. I'm so envious because in my line of work, nursing, smiling through your frustrations is the norm. I'd give anything to be able to yell at incompetents.

Kelly I don't know sh*t about fashion and I don't care to. I love your show and I love YOU. You have a sharp tongue and tell it how it is. You say what ever one else wishes they had the balls to say! Good for you! I have to admit that I laughed my a** when the intern did not spell financial right. Really? Aren't these kids in college??? And the whole no tissue paper in the bags gig? My 8 year old could have done those bags properly BLINDFOLDED!!!! Thanks for the laughs and showing that the fashion industry is not really all glitz and glamour all the time. People need a reality check! You work your a** off and it is amazing to see your work and life as a single mother for what it really is! Can't wait to watch the rest of the season

Reality check to those of you who are trying to get a job with Kell: PR is all about appearance/perception. To submit a comment on this site that includes misspelled words, words that are improperly used (e.g., "invested" when the word is "vested") paints a very clear picture of someone who is not an improvement over the curent cast of interns. It matters. It always matters, and it's the basis on which peope will judge you.

Just wanted to let you know I admire you as a mother. I see how you light up when you are with your child. Also take time out to enjoy your life and health because you look like you work so hard and you and your employee look so tired and worn.

Kelly ,love love love your show... Loved you on the hills and the city glad you have your own show it's Awesome..

Hey Kell, I am far more competent than all your interns rolled in one. Your show is funny. I loved the bag incident, I totally agree with you. Also I can recommend a Healing Reiki Master. Excellent, you feel spiritually revived and mentally revived.

i love your show you are awsome.... you are a great example to follow... we need more strong womens like you .... i love you and the show... hey i also would like to work for you a boss like you is what makes a good employee.♥

Kelly, YOU ROCK!
I am already hooked on the show. Really enjoy watching Kelly and her staff. Kelly's work ethic is so admirable; her work/life balance and being a single mother. Thank you for doing this show!!!

Your interns did not have any common sense!Although you may kind of look "tough", I think you are a very good person (besides good professional.)
peace and love
Flor!
