Stick to Your Guns

Find out why Jonathan disagreed with the other judges on Brig's win.

Apr 13, 2010

My problem with Janine's hair was that she did it before in the competition. It's not about doing something again, she made a statement saying something about isn’t it about taking something great and making it better? It's not necessarily always about reinventing the wheel—she's right on that note—but when you're in a competition on a TV show that has 10 episodes and in on of them you've already done something you don't want to do it again. And the frizz thing, to me, it's a little boring. However she did it well. If Matthew wasn't there and I was the only judge she would have won it. I just don't think Brig did anything with regards to being a "shear genius." As far as Linda goes, arguing with me and saying that you can't do something edgy and beautiful at the same time... what I say to that is, Linda Wells, I do that every day seven times a day on every head I do, edgy and beautiful at the same time. Make an appointment with me and I'll show you edgy and beautiful on your own head. If you haven't had that experience, I recommend she call me and set up an appointment because it's kind of cool. There was a struggle and there was a battle for some reason and I didn't understand why. They thought maybe what Brig had done was innovative and different. If I built a Ferrari and made it look like a bicycle it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be the greatest Ferrari ever made just because it's different. Sometimes if something is too different it crosses the line and the margin of being wrong. That's my issue. Maybe if she had taken their hair and created sculptures and shapes with their own hair with volume and shape built into sculptures, rather than switching their hair back into ponytails and then taping hair on their heads. If she had built structures with their own hair, and then laminated that, that's a different story. Now we're talking about architecturally pure hair that becomes a sculpture. I've seen that done and it's incredible and very difficult to do.

You are the only judge with any sense and I wish you could have had the final say.

Hello Jonathan,

I agree with your assessment of the finale. Matthew was totally robbed of the win. His hairstyles were dramatic, and amazing. Since the contest was based upon styling hair to best effect, he won hands down. I liked Janine's as well. But, it was deja vu. Brig's monstrosities were deja vu too, but in a different way. Her "styles" were craft projects. The buns were done by a team mate, not her. The plastic caps and scotch taped laquered faux hair was hideous and uninspiring. The challenge prior to the finale baffled me also. Brig worked with cotton candy extentions just as she did in an earlier food challenge. It landered her in the bottom 2 then. Miraculously, she won the next time she "created" the same effect. Her entire time on the show was a wasted spot. Her win showed that "Hair is NOT important". It isn't even necessary... Thank you for your unabridged and honest insights!!!

Okaayy. What about the manner in which the hairstylists conducted themselves off and on our TV screens. When it comes down to it, who was kind, considerate and gracious, or what is the one word? Oh yes, here is the word - PROFESSIONAL. Matthew hands down acted more Professionally throughout the competition. And yes, I agree, definitely agree, with Mr Antin. Matthew won the competition. Matthew DID hair, and I would like to add, Matthew behavior was what won him over in my household. Thanks Matthew for being a Pro.

Thank you for speaking for the rest of us. A bun on all the models is NOT styling; this is a hair competion, where was the hair? Really, how long did it take her to do the models hair and it was all the same. It was boring and not interesting.

I hate to say this but I can't watch next season, I was too disappointed.

When I saw Matthew's hairstyles I thought, "those look like those tired pussy cat doll hair dos (or donts)". Sorry, JA, that look has come and gone. Brynn brought something new. Maybe you could become her apprentice. Sounds like you're needing new clients...

Thank you for expressing what I thought as well. Brig did not deserve to win a hair styling competition. A fashion design competition - sure, why not? I think the producers kept Brig in the competition because of the dramatic tension between her, Janine & Matthew. As a result, I won't watch this show next season. This is a reality show - but I guess the producers and judges aren't as interested in "reality" as the viewers are.

Soooo true Jonathan--maybe it was because you are the only true hair stylist on the panel--brig was horrible throughout and should have been tossed in the beginning. How can someone win after losing or being on bottom every week? Maybe there should be a score kept for each week. Matthew was clearly the winner throughout the show with Janine a close second. I guess Brig's annoying oddness and supposedly cutesy outfits were seen as entertaining (??), and supposed to encourage viewers (NOT)..too bad because I won't bother to watch next time.

Jonathan, I MISS YOUR SHOW! PLEASE come back on the air--you were a breath of fresh air!!! BTW How is your baby [probably now a toddler]?

Hugs, #1Nana fm MD

I agree with you all way. I also think you should have had the designer be one of the judges for the finale, after all, it was his fashion show.

Pretty much agree with Jonathan about everything: Matthew was doing inspired work with actual hair.

Also agree that Jon (if he had gotten over his self-consciousness regarding everything he thought he couldn't do) could have gone further in the show. Loved his attitude and that he didn't make the competition personal just really grooved on doing hair.

Since I'm pretty much always disappointed in the cuts I get (styling matters less than what I can do on my own with the cut once I get home) the underlying question for me during this competition was, "who would I pick to do my hair?"

Looking forward to Jonathan's new product line. Enjoyed his previous line (especially Dirt).

Thank you Jonathan for finally speaking. I agree with you totally!

Thank you Jonathan! I totally agree with everything you said.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you had to say. Britt was a comidic character and not a nice person. Matthew had so much more talent. He was robbed.

Jonathan,

Watched your show all the time I can't wait for the new one since I will never watch Shear Genius ever again. It was nice to see you get what the rest of us are mad about. The show was a let down you are right it is no long about the hair Brig never should have won and should have been gone weeks ago. Matthew should have won and I hope he reads this blog and sees how much support he has. Thank you again and can't wait for your new show.

Jonathan you were the voice of reason this entire season. You seemed to be the only judge who actually knew what you were talking about. Your critiques and comments were spot on and professional. Loved Tabitha as quest judge as well. Please come back next season. You're the only reason to keep watching. Peace.

OK…….the years I managed a salon (and thank God, only one really bad hairdresser) this was the first season I watched this show. Jon, one thing that has bothered me the whole season…….and something I am sure you would not allow people in your own salon do…….too much abusive language. It is disrespectful to both clients and co-workers. Abusive language has no business in the work place. Your constant use of four, five and seven letter words far overshadowed most constructive criticism.

I have to agree with another poster about Camla Alves -- her command of the English language leaves a lot to be desired as a show hostess. Also, that tag line, “Remember, hair is important”. ……welllllllll……..Y’all really need something with a bit more zing! Even if you have to go back to the Bible and pull out the well known phrase about a woman’s hair being her crowning glory.

Episode 8 was the best! The hair was so-so……it was the photographer who was the sheer genius!

Though I liked Janine and Matthew all season long, I had to give it to Brig.. she made the clothes/fashion shine and it was about being creative with hair styles in fashion show.

Hair can only be done so many ways and I think we have seen it all, shiny, well cut, blah blah.. boring. Brig's look was very "haute couture", original and very brave. And not Beverly Hills for a change. Also, she was so unpopular all season I am glad she had a chance to win it all.

Yes! I'm so glad I read your blog tonight while waiting for Housewives to come on....... Couldn't agree more......when Brig won, I was disappointed with where the show went......she had a good idea but she didn't do hair......the model's hair. She didn't need models to do what she did nor did she have to work with the different textures of each live model to get the affect she wanted which adds to the difficulty......she did a craft project, not good hair......her finish look was nice, very cool, but don't believe it was the winner of the last task one bit. So glad to have read your blog........was second guessing myself and I'm good at these things. Whew.......I'm ok!

Matthew should have won. He did incredible hair, very creative. Brig wrapped hair in glad wrap. wohn, wohn...

I have to disagree with you Jon... this is a competition show to find the next great hair "artist," and not the one who can pull off the best hair styles for clients. Isn't that why it's called "Shear GENIUS??" And honesty, is there anything genius about Matthew or Janine?

Yes, they are both good hairstylists and did very well throughout the competition... but they're also very ordinary and boring. There's thousands of hairstylists out there just like them.

I believe skills can be learned, but creativity and vision is something you are born with. As sloppy and crazy as Brig may have been throughout the competition, she is the only one who had her own unique voice as an artist and the potential to grow.

I think you are looking at the competition from a business point-of-view rather than as an artist. Maybe that's what you missed... maybe you can give Matthew and Janine a job at your salon, I'm sure they can churn out some nice "red carpet" looks for your clients.

That hair was just atrocious period!!Omg she had the worst hair from week to week!!Shame on the judges .. There were way better stylists there then her !!

I would love for Jon to cut my hair. You would have to pay ME to let Brigg touch it!!!

I agree 100% I thing brig should have gone home a long time ago and I also think that Janine should have won this. She took something we have seen on the run way before and put a new twist on it it was beautiful and her models didn't look like aliens!Brig should have been sent home when she F^^ked up the braids she is ridiculous.

I overwhelmingly wanted MATTHEW to win too. what BS that Brig one, I was so shocked!

Amem- At least 1 judge had it right....What a joke

Jonathan knows hair. I cannot wait for a REAL hair show.. minus Camilla, and MINUS BRIG. Take notes ladies. This is the way of the hair as told by Jon Antin!

Agreed! I think both Matthew and Janine proved throughout this season that they are brilliant artists. They were winning every week! If the judges thought Brigs work was so incredible why wasn’t she winning more individual challenges???

Bravo, get a new tag line. 'Hair is important' is about the most stupid line that I've ever heard. Who came up with that one?? Lose it, scratch it, erase it. Ridiculous. And do you think that you could find a host who could be easily understood? Annoying to only get part of the dialogue of one individual. Thanks.

You are so right about Brig and Matthew! What were the other judges thinking! UGH!

We could not agree with Jonathan more. Brigs styles were atrocious. She is wonderful with accessories but completely clueless when it comes to hair. How she even made it to the finale is beyond me because she doesn't style hair, she just adds to it. Matthew's styles were fantastic and before we even heard what the judges had to say we had picked him as the winner. We were big fans of Shear Genius for the first two seasons but with the new hostess who can not even speak clearly and the judges poor taste (except for Jonathan), I don't think we will be returning viewers.

I disagree. Jeaniene and Matthew were great, but they're ordinary. They don't accept criticism well and don't have the right attidute. Even though it's "Shear Genius", you have to have the right potential and motive. Brig helps people feel more confident about themselves and she created a work of art, Jon, ART!

You knocked it outta the salon Jonathan! Glad you spoke up and didn't let the other judges totally "dumb down" the competition by selecting that wackie doodle Brig unanimously! Will definitely watch your upcoming show and have now "untivoed" Sheer Stupidity from my DVR.

I am actually glad I missed the Season Finale, because I would probably have thrown something at my TV when they announced that Brig was the winner. WTF?!? That is comical. I was pulling for Matthew (or Janine). They were consistent throughout the entire season and able to conquer so many different types of hair. Brig fudged her way through to the finale. I will definitely NOT be watching next season!-Thanks.

Jonathan you are so right! Brig was as obnoxious as her hair styles and in no way a winner. Matthew or Janine, both GREAT hair stylists should have won.

Having Brig take first place has finished Shear Genius for me. I couldn't believe she made it to the finale, let alone took the prize!! What were those judges thinking. Okay, another realty show off my radar. Thanks, I'll spend my time elsewhere.

What the hell were the judges thinking, picking Brig as the winner, Jonathan is the only one who had it right on with who should have won. From the very beginning Brig was so out there with her styles, sure there were a couple that was OK, but through out the whole season of Shear Genius she sucked. What a disappointing ending as Brig should have been gone within the first couple of weeks. As Jonathan put it, this is a competition of doing REAL hair, not putting props together then sticking and gluing it on the models head. Bad,Bad,Bad choice. Jonathan's review and thoughts were spot on, as for the rest of you judges, maybe a refresher course on REAL hair should be in you schedules.

I'm with some of the other bloggers, I'M SO GLAD I MISSED THE FINALE.

I would have to totally agree with Jon Antin, Brig was a disaster from the beginning, I have been doing hair for over 28 years and I would have fired her from my shop if everyone looked like this. Janine and Matthew had wins all the way through the competition and Brig was usually at the bottom of the barrell, the one episode where they didn't get rid of anyone (should have been Brig) I knew that it was fixed!! There is no way I would ever have Brig do my hair, no matter how famous she gets!

I have enjoyed this show and looked forward to each new season. I honestly was shocked that Brig won the final challenge. You never saw her do beautiful or cutting edge hair, only outrageous styles that any child could do with a brush and lots of product that no normal person would ever want.. If the show is going to continue picking the outrageous instead of the best, you need to change the name of the show. Really Jonathan please talk some sense into the producers.

I totally agree with your assessment of how the contest should have gone. Bree did a bunch of lousy do's all season and because she did a couple of good styles for the finally she won. Big disappointment. Those big Disney bows she wore in her hair pretty much exhibited her lack of style and imagination.

AT the risk of using tooooo much verbage! OMG..Yes Jonathon you are correct! R U Kidding.. that women was a one circus act!!

Most of the people here defending "Brig" don't even get her name right and from the way they speak obviously are not hairstylists. I must wholeheartedly agree with Jonathon Antin. I will give the show one more season to step up the game from this past horrible season. I hope they can bring on some real judges with real taste. Jonathon is the only one with good taste this past season on a consistent level.
