This throw blanket it stalking me. It’s popping up on my Instagram feed, in my notifications, on my LiketoKnow.it. And every single time I see a photo of it—in all its bountiful, downy glory—I simultaneously swoon and burst out laughing. I mean, who doesn’t want to dive bomb this chunky knit blanket and take a deep, long nap? But at the same time, there's something almost Seussical about it, right?
Created by a Kiev, Ukraine-based Etsy designer, who knits these treasures BY HAND, the “grand punto blanket“ has sparked world-wide interest—likely for the snuggly and silly reasons stated above. Favorited by more than 54,000 people on Etsy (FYI, that’s very high and very unusual for the platform) and liked by more than 190,000 people on Instagram and by nearly 40,000 on Facebook, Ohhio is the creation of 27-year-old Anna Marinenko, who stumbled upon the pretty wool spools and lacking knitting needles, decided to weave a blanket by hand instead. The rest, as they say, is history.
With dozens and dozens of copycats on Etsy popping up since Marinenko’s arrival on the scene in late 2015, it can be hard to find the “original” crazy huge, crazy soft blanket that everyone is talking about. Unfortunately, when you do get there, you might have a bit of sticker shock (prices start at $295 and head north to $698). If that’s the case, we’ve got some alternative throw blanket options below that will surely keep you equally warm this winter season—though admittedly, your photo ops might not be quite as hilarious.
