Paris Hilton, queen of the early aughts, gifted the pop culture landscape with many memorable tokens — does the phrase "That's hot" ring a bell? But, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills niece also takes credit for something that's so ubiquitous these days, we can hardly imagine a time without it. That's right: Ms. Hilton claims that she invented the selfie, with a little help from the legendary Britney Spears. And, Hilton even has a relic from 2006 to prove it.
The perfume mogul recently took to Twitter to celebrate the apparent anniversary of selfie madness. In two side-by-side throwback snaps, Hilton and Spears grin into the camera, blissfully unaware of the worldwide phenomenon they were about to unleash. "11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!," the socialite announced.
Well, happy birthday, selfie! Had we known, we would have sent a card.
This isn't the first time that Hilton has come out as the inventor of Instagram's preferred type of portrait. Chatting with W magazine back in March, the "Stars Are Blind" singer noted: "If a beeper had a camera, I would have taken a selfie with it. I think I have a selfie from when I was a little kid, like on a disposable camera.”
When she's not carrying on her own legacy by snapping selfies, the famous blonde has been busy writing new music. Hilton recently released the catchy track "Summer Reign," and will drop a new album soon. We can't wait!
