Rachel Zoe

Free Spirit

Rachel on Kate Hudson's free-spirited attitude, losing a coveted Oscar dress, and more.

August 31, 2010

Bravotv.com: You take a detour and meet Kate Hudson in London.

Rachel: I think Kate is very free spirited and one of the coolest girls I've ever known. I think whenever I'm around Kate, I tend to step outside my comfort zone and I always want to do what she wants me to do. I feel like I'm always a little more adventurous when I'm with her, because I kinda feel like a loser for not being so adventurous. I start to feel really stupid! I wonder why I'm so uptight, why can't I do something unexpected? Not be so set in my ways. That's always fun. She's just like this effortless, free-spirited, cool girl who laughs and smiles her way through life and I love that about her.

Rodger is a lot more vocal this year about being over the dress drama. He wants to spend more time with you, and you get in an argument with him over finding the perfect dress, and he's over it.

I think Rodger, after a while, will say, "I mean, seriously babe? I can't." He just can't watch me get pissed off. He finds it very hard to believe that it's the only dress there is. That's really what it comes down to. It's not the only dress, but in that moment, it seems like that's the only dress. It's the one I want. Whenever it's the one I want, I'm not good at taking no for an answer. When that happens, you have relationships with these designers and you do so much for them time and time again, that you're just wondering why is this happening? I'm promised a dress by a designer and I'm not getting it.

So the dress that ended up on Sandra Bullock, you had to let that go.

It was really tough. Sandra was a nominee. Everyone kind of knew she was going to win. I think the only fault there on the designer's part is to be honest with me. Say to me look, Sandra's nominated. As my friend tell the truth, because as their friend, I'm going to understand that. That's what it comes down to. I expect honesty. It all worked out in the end though. My clients were so happy with their choices that it didn't even matter. They liked their dresses so much better. So it was fine!

How was meeting with Donatella?

Donatella is the best. She's the best. We've worked together for many years. She's one of the queens of the red carpet. She's incredible. She always comes through for me. I think we have this great relationship and I always love seeing her when I'm in Milan.

Brad meets you in Milan to go vintage shopping. Has the fact that your collection is vintage-inspired made your shopping habits worse?

No, because now I can justify it! I can totally justify spending more. It's funny, for as much as Rodger's made fun of me over the years for spending all this money, when it came to designing my first collection, we didn't even need to shop. It was awesome.

Rachel, Rachel
I think you are such a clever gal, but from someone who has it and recognizes itlet me tell you I seriously think you have OCD. If you don't address it now, it will continue to sabotage your life before you even realize that people are starting to leave your life because they can't take you under the influence of ICD anymore. You definately have it.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!! I think you are an original and you have a fun personality. I also like it that you and Brad keep it real. Marriage can be challenging, thanks for letting the viewers in on your life.

It is really great now that (sorry) T is gone. The office dynamic is great and you all look so much better and more focused. Keep up the great work I really enjoy watching.

Rachel,
Just do it. Millions of women have stressful, high profile careers and children. I had my one and only at 41, but I would not recommend waiting any longer. It is harder to "get back" physically for some women. Eat we,sleep, and exercise before during and after getting pregnant. You'll be fine, and have a beautiful family. In fact it could be the most creative experiience of your life. Allow Roger to really help you; allow him to do so. You will be happier. Ask Heidi Klum how she manages the body, family and career. Your overthinking it, and will regret not having that baby bump to style!

I loved watching Rachel & Kate together! Kate has an amazing energy and I wish you could bottle her personality and vitality for life and sell it. You'd make a fortune. What a sweetheart!

I'm dying to get my hands on the hat that Rachel was wearing in London... the one with the small feather. I'm not even sure of what the style is called... it wasn't a fedora. I'm sure it's vintage but, if it's not... if anyone knows, please, please tell me! Many thanks!

I love watching the fashion shows. They just make me wish I was richer and thinner. Sadly, those great clothes don't come in a size 14 :( Diet inspiration!

Kate looked gorgeous in that green Burberry & I love the new Burberry line. Loved Rachel's petal coat as well. I'm dying to get over to London and hit the vintage stores! Thanks for all of the fashion inspiration!

Rachel - you have an amazing sense of style!! How do we find out about your next QVC showing schedule?
I would really like to see what your clothing line looks like.

Forget all the stuff, think of the hug, the smile, the wink, the smurk of the ones you love. Think long and hard about these moments; they are truly what matters in life. Life; think about that too! I think you are too special to spoil it on just one! Whatever you decide, please know that someone gave you this gift, perhaps you should pass it along! Or will it be lost forever?

The show is so much more pleasant and enjoyable to watch without the selfish attitude and disrespect that Taylor brought to the show. The element of drama is still present, despite Taylor's exit, with the issue of Rachel and Rodger starting a family, which I'm sure helps to boost the ratings a bit, as that (drama of some kind) is what often keeps people tuning in, whether they like to admit it or not. I think as viewers we should remind ourselves that even though this is a "reality" show, it is still, in fact, television, and not everything is as it seems on TV. That being said, bringing another life into this world should not be done lightly, and should be done with responsibility and reflection whenever possible. Perhaps we should try to be less judgmental about Rachel and her fear of parenting and pregnancy, as she has said that it already weighs on her daily. It seems obvious to me that she understands the gravity of the situation and the short time frame in which to make a decision that will affect her entire life and the lives of those around her.I applaud her for trying to make the decision consciously and responsibly. I do admit I melted a little when Rodger was excited about the legacy that they might pass on to the future generation (Milan Fashion Week) It was an example of the few times, on camera, when he has appeared excited about fashion and how that passion might live on in their progeny. Anyway, all the inquiry of will they or won't they could be moot at this point; I saw Rachel doing the press for QVC Live this last week, and am quite sure she was sporting a baby bump! Mah-jor!

Rachel I love your show.
I would love to work for you and be a part of your team.
You are a loving, caring person and treat your employees with respect.
You have great sense of style.

I remember the other seasons when youtraveled and shopped for yourself from Designer vintage and new showrooms for clothes for yourself and sent them to your business. Does your business pay for all those clothes because they are business pieces and eventually will end up on a sales rack. I ask because some clothes are clearly borrowed from the designers for certain stars and then there were the wild shopping sprees for yourself in the past shows that I have not seen during this season.

This season of Rachel Zoe has been the BEST. We used to tune in and turn whenever Taylor came on. Now that she is gone, its perfect. We so much about fashion now... BUT PLEASE BRAD do not become the new Taylor with all the insecure drama. Please. Don't ruin a good thing. We tune in to relax and enjoy the fashion... not the drama. we have enough of that in our own lives.

Rachel, you are so lucky to have such a patient & considerate husband. Give a little - pay more attention to him. Take time for him. When you are older the dresses won't matter. I'm happily married & don't have children. But I couldn't & I think about it often. Love & patience to you both, Donna

Rachel, First just want to say love the show and all of the fashion tips.

BUT I feel if you dont spend more time with Rodger you will lose him quickly. If you really dont want a baby you have to tell him now, I can feel the tension and all of the arguments is causing on TV I cant even imagine how much more is going on in your everyday life. Just make a decision one way or the other and move on.
Why dont you adopt???/ there are so many babies out there that need homes and you two could provide a great life for one of those babies. That way everyone is happy all the way around. Rodger is an amazing husband and partner to you, so I would hate to see you lose him, I dont think your really thinking about that as you dont feel it would happen, but believe me Ive seen it so many times in my 49 yrs with women who think that there man will never leave them, and Poof there gone.

Take care of yourself and your hubby and make that decision, then move on please

I just want to second the suggestion of adoption. I just watched the episode in which you told Joey you would afraid of finding out that, at 38, you couldn't get pregnant or couldn't carry to term. I became a mom at 42 through adoption. Now, at almost 45, I have a gorgeous, curious, sweet, smart, funny 3-year old daughter. After dedicating myself single-mindedly to my career for 20 years, I can now say that there's nothing better than the reward of balancing work and family. I work part time now and make my daughter as much of priority as I can. Last night was a rare occasion when I was at an evening meeting, and nothing was better than getting a voice mail from my daughter at bedtime saying, "I miss you, Mommy! I love you! (kiss, kiss)"! Also, you are fortunate to have a partner in Rodger who will share the parenting with you, and the financial success to be able to afford child care help. Don't miss out, and don't be afraid of the biological clock. Adoption is absolutely incredible if you find you need options. And doesn't everyone always need options?!

Adoption will never fully fulfill a woman's dream to have her own flesh & blood. Never.

Rachel, Watching you tonight my heart broke for you. You were discussing tonight how if a pregnancy did not work out that it would devistate you. You did not feel you were strong enough to handle a miscarriage or something going wrong. I totally understand. I also understand that if I would have let my fear control whether I had a baby or not I would not have the two beautiful children that I do have. I would have given up after the first 2 miscarriages. Did I feel like giving up? YES! I look into the chocolate brown eyes of my lovely daughter and know that my fear even when they told me that she would be born handicap was holding me back from living the life I was destined to live. (by the way, she's not handicap but perfectly formed!) Between my daughter and son I had another 3 miscarriages and 5 years. I see my son and his ever joyous mischivious blue eyes and know that my fear even though was totally understandable could have robbed me of the joy of knowing the two wonderful spirits that I have been blessed enough to be entrusted with. My two children are the gifts that I wanted to receive but didn't think that I was strong enough to handle.
My fear of failure has held me back in a lot of areas of my life. The two times that I walked through that fear and saw the other side I reaped the benefits. I don't count the 7 miscarriages (total after two more miscarriages after our son) as losses but as a road that I needed to take to better appreciate the gift of life I have been given.
Whether you do or do not have children let that fear rest in the hands of the Maker. If you want to have children then let down the resistance of failure and open yourself up to the possibility of success.

Rachel, you are the best dressed at this week's NY Fashion Week! You should be designing for the designers !

For those who seek drama, fights, gossip, and cheap thrills - exit Rachel Zoe Project and enter Jersey Shore or any of the housewives.
For a person like myself, who appreciates high fashion, how clothes emphasize the best features of the person and how that person transforms wearing flattering wardrobe - this show is a total turn on. It relaxes, it lets you dream about beautiful garments and how you would look in them...
My champagne is chilling and i am ready to dive into a world of luring, totally irresistible fashion...Rachel Zoe fashion.
Cheers,
Russian Girl

Rachel, you're looking stunning at the New York fashion Week Shows!!! Saw photos in the media of you at Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan shows! I love your new Bardot look!! Also love How you and Rodger looked at Chanel luncheon, Rodgers suit was great- so glamorous. You have exquisite taste, and Rodger is amazing cute.

Dear Rachel, You are a phenomenal stylist. If you feel so badly about losing an Oscar Dress that will be worn once, how do you think you will feel about missing out on having a child with your husband, which is a lifelong loss.

Look at Skinny Girl Bethanny Frankel, who is so busy, yet she took a few months to be pregnant and has a baby and a very full meaningful life, full of real friends, and family, as well as business. She also got back to her size 2 figure. Your Gay assistants, and celebrity acquaintances, though they are very talented, constantly say things like "do I look fat?" which is making you fear gaining weight for a pregnancy. You need to surround yourself with healthier influences.

Are a few minutes or hours with celebrities a substitute for real time with friends and family? Your show shows a lack of balance, and when Rodger tries to point it out, you get angry instead of listening. When you are married, its not all about you, but your husband as well.

Rachel you are very talented and have exquisite good taste in clothes. Your clothes are gorgeous. You should have your own clothing line already in Macys, Bloomingdals or Target, or represent a major fashion house and stop spending all your time and effort on finding dresses for "Demi and Cameron and Demi and Cameron".

It was sad to hear you say how Kate Hudson is Royalty and that you are just a girl from New Jersey. She is no better or different than you or anyone else. You really need to start separating the superficial from the real. Spending a couple of hours with celebrities is just superficial and you shouldn't sacrifice a real life for that.

In ten years the blue dress on Demi will be forgotten, in fact in ten minutes its forgotten, but not having a child with your husband will be a regret forever. When you're 70 years old, what will matter- Demi's blue dress, or your child who gives you endless joy? Everyone else have real lives while you are missing out on yours fawning over celebrity.

Rachel needs to look at victoria Beckham and Gwen and others like them, on how to have Children, and a business, clothing and accessories line. She needs to take a good look at Rodger, how cute and nice he is, and have a more well rounded real life with him, a baby with him, instead of obsessing over superficial few minute encounters with Lagerfeld or Halston or starlets. Fashion shows are all the same after you've seen 50 of them. Skinny girls walking in clothes. Rachel, stop looking at yourself in the mirror and look at the cute guy to your right!

My daughters name is Zoe. People seem to to struggle pronouncing it correctly and I'm constantly correcting them. Now I run across this show and you made my battle worse!

Rachel ! Thank you, I love your show and your website... please continue to suggest great sites to shop and find champagne fashion on a beer budget... it really helps during this tough economic time.

Excited for Tues. show next week.

I still love the show but you need to take better care of
Roger, if you don't some other woman will.
I am hearing the same things I heard from
John Goselin be careful because he is soooo
cute. Get on the baby bandwagon before it's too
late.

I am scared, I see Roger saying the same
things John Goslin did. If you don't take
better care of him some other woman will.
Still love ya but be careful, he's pretty cute!

Eventhough is so frivolous I can't stop watching! Love, love love it! There's only one thing that bothers me about Rachel, she looks mortified when her husband brings up comments about starting having a family (her face tells everything). He looks ready, she doesn't and she's not getting any younger. If you don't want children, say it! own it! admit it! and stop avoiding your husband about it! There's never "good timing" to have kids, if you want them just do it! things will fall into place! if you think kids are not for you, totally ok with that, we respect you! just be honest about it! I have no business telling you this but since it was brought up on the show... just wanted to comment about it!

GOd I feel terrible for your husband. You really need to sit back and evalute what is important to you...on a REAL level and show it...whatever it may be some respect. I hope that is your husband, but I see no evidence of that. It's great to love your career and be so passionate about what you do...but it's what you do...not who you ARE.

I'm so glad you got rid of that blonde girl and replaced her with Brad. He's such a sweetie. You two seem to mesh very well together. Honey, if you're thinking about having a baby, you better get busy. What happens is, some of you girls like the limelight so much, and might not ever get the chance to experience child birth. Clock is ticking....but ofcourse, its your life & your decision. Good luck with everything! I think you're a very sweet girl!

Rachael,

You rock! your show is my favorite on Bravo. You are building your career and doing a great job at it. I love Rodger and hope he will stick by you. To have a child at everyone else request would not be right. You know your heart and what you want for this time in your life.DON'T LET ANYONE DICTATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS YOU WILL REGRET IT! Children are wonderful you have shown that you would be a wonderful mother by saying that you would drop everything in your life to give your child the best, that's wonderful. Do not let the selfishness of others over power your needs, marriage is a constant give and take but not over children. Rodger knows that that would end things for you. God knows I love Rodger but if he loves you he will wait til you ready. Have children when you are ready not everyone else.
This proves the point of how hard it is to choose motherhood over career. YOU KNOW THAT THE PRESSURE FROM RODGER FOR YOUR TIME WONT END WHEN YOU HAVE A CHILD JUST GET WORSE!
Remember to make time for Rodger, and take your time and decide when you add to your family.

My prayers for total happiness in your life.

Rachel, if i was a celebrity i would use your services. Your impeccable sense of style, the effort you and your team put into making a client look her best, your own personal style = success.
I LOVE that you wear a lot of Chanel this season. It totally suits you.
"Chanel a day keeps doctors away" ,you said it ! ;-)
I was so impressed by your style, that i got myself a nice Chanel jacket, so elegant, so classic. It never goes out of style.
Can not wait till next episode.
Ciao,
Russian Girl

I am amazed by the Marchesa? dress worn by Sandra Bullock at the Oscars--you pointed to it and said "Can you say best dressed?" and you were so right!! She was voted best dressed at the Oscars! You do know your stuff!! Love your show--

Rachel you are 39! Brad adores you. Have a baby, listen to your sister. I got pregnant at 39 just 6 months after I started my own buisiness. I was freaked out when I first discovered I was pregnant, but I really enjoyed being pregnant and my skin never looked better. Being a mother is a a beautiful thing and having a precious little baby only makes life better. WAtching you dress other women, i know you need a little child to dress and care for. Having a child will give you much better perspective on everything, trust me on that one. Your youth is fleeting and its time to grow up and move in to the next chapter of your life. Be nice to Brad. Most women would give anything to have a husband that wanted to spend more time with his wife. You are a very lucky woman.

PS- Rachel's husband's name is Rodger, not Brad.

Women who choose a stressful long term career over family and a husband end up old and bitter. Stop with all the drama and ignoring your husband who is very SWEET!!! Having a business is being able to hire people to do the work and not having to be involved in every single thing, you seem to have MAJOR control issues. BTW Brad your always talking about 'Daddys', show some skin babe Daddy wants to see

I purchased one of your scarves from qvc and love it. Kind of take it everywhere.

Fashion is confusing to me, so I love watching and learning from your show.

I have a suggestion about your blog. I love reading blogs that are written from the heart. I want to hear what you felt, what you said to yourself or to a friend, while watching the episode, as if I were sitting there watching it with you. The Q&A type of interview leaves me flat.

Love you, looking forward to the next episode and to your next qvc appearance.

We saw a different, free-er, looser Rachel when you were with Kate - spontaniety is one of the keys to creativity, I feel.

Happy Belated Birthday ~ ! 39 & holding eh? You Rock Rach~!

~Tip 'o the hat from Texas

Like your show - but the swearing is overwhelming. Too many bleeps!

I absolutely agree that there is entirely too much cursing on this sweet show! When Rachel and Rodger finally decide to have a baby...there better be some soap around for those foul mouths!!! :)

I love you show and think you are the best...Keep up the good work and love the way your dress.

I CERTAINLY AGREE. "I LOVE" THE RACHEL ZOE PROJECT. HER FASHION STYLE IS DEAD ON RIGHT. I HAVE WATCHED THIS SHOW FROM DAY ONE.

I really love your show. But, I have to be honest, I really think you treated Rodger sorta badly when you were across the pond. I know you were stressing about the Oscars but, blah, blah blah. When anyone else was in the picture, like Kate Hudson, your attitude was totally different. You need to cut Rodger some slack, he is trying to understand your total commitment to your business. Just remember it is his business too, he has been there ever step of the way. I guess if he can't stand being there and going to all the shows maybe he should stay home. I hope I am not sounding mean but an observation/1

Sorry you lost THE dress...
When the designer pulled the dress to give to a BIG star like Sandra Bullock, without being honest to you... I guess they are letting you know maybe you're not the top stylist in town with the hottest clients now. Yeah, I see why you would be upset by that slap in the face of respect and the downward spiral of your standings in the fickle fashion totem pole. Hope you get back up.

Love you Rach! You make me laugh! I'm not into fashion at all but I really like your show, crew and you.

Rachel, you're cool, but this episode was soooo boring. Milan, London -we didn't see you enjoy either of them! I know it's all about fashion, but if I wanted to see last year's runway shows I could have seen them online. It would have been nice to see you with Kate at a cafe somewhere! Your hubby had the right idea. What's wrong with doing what the locals do? You really need to step out of the 'fashion bubble' now and then.

Hi Rachel
How am I the first response 24 hrs later? I never really followed your blog, but checked it out today b/c last night's episode with Kate Hudson was such a disaster.
I actually said out loud, "OMG crawl out of her ass any time now!" it was embarassing.
It may be time to think about a kid (RE: Jeff Lewis never looked cuter than when Mason was sitting in his lap!) - if not for you, for more interest in the show. Roggg used "SUX" 2 times in the first episode.
A quick recap: your obsession with fashion may not be so cute.

I saw the episode with Rachel & Kate as very genuine and a much-needed break in the chaos that comes sometimes with having a successful career.

If someone doesn't like the show, they sure typed alot here ;) Finger glued to the remote eh?

Luv you Rach & Co.

WE think this is the best season EVER of the Rachel Zoe Project. Its less drama with Taylor and more about fashion. We LOVE it. We're so glad Taylor is gone.
