You Just Get Lucky

Producer Dave Rupel gives us a peek behind the curtain, and admits you can't make this stuff up.

Dec 16, 2010

What can I say about this week's episode other than I love it! Granted, it wasn’t so fun the night we shot Camille’s dinner party, but months later, it still makes me laugh. I’m not trying to make light of any of the drama the women went through. There were a lot of tears and hurt feelings that came out of that night. But as an episode of a reality show, it’s pretty much an instant classic as far as I’m concerned.

And that’s because it’s real. As I stated in my first blog, I’ve worked as a writer on scripted programs before. But never in a million years would I have thought to write a script that would be as wacky, and outrageous, and over-the-top as what happened at Camille’s that night, because it wouldn’t seem believable!

I bring this up because I’ve seen a slew of comments both on my blog, but also around the Internet, questioning if our show is real or is it secretly scripted? It’s a common question of reality shows–and I certainly can’t speak for every reality show out there–but our show is very real.

I can't imagine that one - when Camille wanted the dinner party with the girls, she really didn't need to have her two sidekicks there. They were there for a reason and you hear them setting up the attack on kyle. I gotta call BS...

What did you find funny about this episode? Wasn't funny, wasn't entertaining, it looked like to me, very orchestrated and predictable episode!! Really, really, over these ladies!

What's "lucky" about stacking the deck? Of course you want this kind of drama, but there are limits to even the worst "can't look away from the tragedy" syndrome. Maybe it's just because your show is the latest Housewife show, but just this evening I was with a group of women who all agreed this one is just too obviously designed for drama ... the recent episodes have been a real turn off.

I look forward to your blog every week!! I am curious to know if RHs will ever have a special episode (like the Reunion show) about the individual interviews with the ladies? I'd love to see how that actually happens. What are they asked to elicit their answers? What are some of the comments made that you don't have room to include in the show? How long do those interviews usually last, are they done as taping goes along or at the beginning or end cause they seem to be wearing the same outfits each week? Thanks again for the terrific blog :)

Thank you for blogging. Because I believe you can't make this up, I also believe most of it is real. BUT....what about what ends up on the edit room floor? Just for fun, can you post some videos of what didn't make it? Like "out takes" kinda. It would be a hoot and I think us viewers would enjoy seeing it. Think about it. Thanks.......Linda

Dave- I am curious about something... I noticed at Mohammed's dinner, that there were a few shots where Kyle was sitting on one side of Martin and then in the next shot the whole thing seemed reversed, as though the film or tape was flipped. There were a few other instances of this at that dinner. Haven't really noticed it throughout the rest of the shows. Just curious to understand why this would happen? It takes away the "reality" just a bit as it throws one off.

Great show- I do believe this is all real and not scripted. I used to live in the Mailbu area and spent 30 years in Los Angeles, and I can testify that this cattiness is the REAL DEAL! Too bad Camille wants to assign the blame to everyone else and not to herself, where it belongs. Kyle and a few others are not completely without blame, but mostly reacting to Camille's initiations of drama. In my view, she set up the night of her dinner with her sidekicks locked and loaded- (Literally). ;) Can't wait to Watch What Happens next!!

Like they say, sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

So my question is that you guys are almost always filming these ladies but is there NO FOOTAGE of this conversation between Kyle and Camille that has sparked this world war? Were there no producers, PAs, assistants, etc... that can confirm or deny what was actually said between them?

Love the show, love your blog, and love your personality (as it comes across in the blog). Great for making real life so much fun (I've always thought real life is much more interesting, funny and fun than scripted shows and you prove it). xo Sarit New York

you do an awesome JOB!!

Sorry but the lunch since between Kim and Kyle with the same outfits, which I did notice too, they spoke about the date, Lisa called on the cell to find out why Kim did not call to thank Martin for driving her home from the dinner. So how do you explain that one if it was the same day as the facial before the dinner party?????

Dave, I agree you really cannot write this stuff. Last night was a REAL throw down. Its great the houswives have an opportunity to view episodes before appearing on Watch What Happens live and Blogging in a timely fashion. I am curious how far in advance of the air date the housewives view the episodes....

Why hasn't anyone aired the actual words spoken out of Kyle's mouth about the trip to Hawaii? Then couldn't we see who is truly lying about all of this? I have my suspicions, but still... I want to know what was really said!

Why have you not yet aired the actual words that came out of Kyle's mouth regarding the Hawaii trip? That way couldn't we see who is truly lying about all of this? I have my suspicions but nonetheless, I think the viewers want to know...!

I'm just curious is there ever a time when a situation gets too heated that you or someone in your crew interferes? At Camille's disastrous dinner party, everyone held their own and there was no need to interfere- it is definitely made good television!

I can understand that you or someone in your crew would interfere if someone was being physically threatened. But would you do anything if you felt that someone was being bullied verbally and they can't defend themselves against the verbal assaults?

Is there a point where you feel it's more important to interfere than making good television?

so if the spa trip and the lunch were on the same day, how come they were "preparing" for the date, and then taking about how the blind date went?? all in the same day, with no time for the actual date to have occured? that sequence really makes no sense

Please, Please do not shy away from any questions we submit towards the gals during the reunion show. We love the show so much, we really just want those difficult questions asked. :)

You say in your blog that the beauty treatment and lunch were shot on the same day. If that is so, how was it that Lisa called to complain about Kim not thanking Martin for the ride home when she had not yet met him?

I LOVED Faye!! I think you should add her to the cast!!!

I've gotta say - I have a group of ladies who are all friends - we all play bunko together once a month and there are times when the conversations get absolutely crazy -- you just can't make that up. We are all friends -- if someone entered into the mix who did not 'fit' I guarantee fireworks similar to what we see on the Housewives shows would ensue - no question about it! Get a group of women together, particularly those who come from different beginnings but who are all clawing their way to the top of some level of social strata, and there's no way it will be an easy climb! Someone's gonna get thrown off the cliff!

I highly doubt you didn't expect the women to fight. Knowing the participants, knowing the psycho, er...I mean psychic, that was going to be in attendance hwo could you not expect more fighting? It was a recipe for disaster from the getgo. Plying that crazy woman with alcohol, knowing she has a loose tongue when she drinks after giving her a person to attack was definitely setting the stage. Who are you all trying to fool?

Just wanted to say that I LOVE this incarnation of Housewives. I don't know what other people are talking about but I think this is definitely one of the more "real" reality shows out there. The only person on here who is clearly calculating/putting on airs/ portraying themselves to be someone that they're not is Camille.

I feel like in the beginning Kim and sometimes Taylor were holding back, and my opinions of them reflected that: total dislike of Kim and indifference to Taylor. But once they started to warm up my views have changed-I'm now rooting for Kim to find her a man (lol) and warming up to Taylor, especially after her charity poker segment.

And while this week's dinner party was entertaining albeit cringeworthy (I literally had to change the channel a couple of times because I couldn't stand it) maybe it is the phoniness of Camille that is coming off? I do think that she had her two friends there to back her up and defend her. Even when she was telling everyone where to sit..ughh...there's something just so fake about her. I do have to say that some of the episodes I've enjoyed the most were the ones that featured Camille the least and during her segments I did flip the channel too. It sure sounds like I change the channel a lot during Housewives, but I swear I love it!! It is definitely my favorite because of the women, and their significant others too, there's just such a good blend...except for that one bad apple it would be perfect!

DEAR KYLE: (despite it being reality TV) u are an amazing women and my fav on the show, allison dosent know what she's talking about u and ur husband have a bond that most women envy for, i applaud you for sticking up 4urself and telling allison how you felt. when she said that my heart broke, i mean how dare she, i am in a loving marriage, we dont have kids yet but weve built a bond for one another that no one can seperate. this is what u an mauricio has a true bond. camille throwing stones was not cool and allison was clearly speaking about camille's life and not yours. I dont wish ill will on any of the women but this eps. was hard to sit thru and it has been the worst i have ever seen.

Your right on about that one!!!

Listen to the Medium. Kyle and Beverly Hills housewives are making things-up for good TV!!!

The producers may not have set this up as an ambush but its pretty clear the desperate Ms Grammer did. Why else were her 2 "guests of honor" so well-prepped and the conversation so staged. Tremendously entertaining! Though the values and lives of the blondes on the show are vapid $$ and narcissistic but the non-stop CRAZY makes viewing such unwholesome FUN- I m addicted!! It would be fascinating to see a follow-up showing the reaction of Beverly Hills society to the Wives' ...

Did you ever think of doing THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF WALMART? Now THAT would be interesting.

I'm not sure if it is just a priceless coincidence, or if someone at Bravo has my same sense of humor. Either way, Camille's quest to be independant from her husband was her focus going in to the season, and the irony is flawless. I fall more in love with bravo every week when the episode opens and Camille says "it's time for me to come out of my husband's shadow and shine!". No matter who is responsible for this foreshadowing gem, BRAVO!!!

I fear this show is becoming the "Kyle" show and the mean girls where Kyle collects her possee and giggles. It has forced Camille to do the same, as someone left out. And Kim is just left out - she needs to go get her own possee I suppose. It really is starting to look like High School.

You guys struck gold with this one .. I cant imagine somebody writing a script like that either ... I do believe that camille is naturally coocoo

That *medium* was creepy. Please don't give her any more airtime!! And don't focus on the catfights. Focus on the glamour, the business challenges, the families, and the fun these ladies have!!

Maybe you are but you have been watching and I just about bet that the next episode you will turn on. Otherwise you would not have wasted your time with this response.

Probably because it may show Kyle actually did say something wrong? Just a thought!

Thanks 4 ruining a show I enjoyed-Medium. After seeing the real Allison Idon't think I can enjoy the show as much-knowing what the real 1 is like. I guess I am alone in preferring the non-drama stuff-like the b-day parties, the trip to Las Vegas and any scene with Lisa and Giggy.

It seems a little more than a coincidence that since NBC owns both Bravo and "The Medium", "The Medium" is cancelled the same week of that the self-described, yet widely disputed, real life character that the show is based upon self implodes on Bravo's RH of BH.

NBC definitely nipped this in the bud knowing the backlash from fans once this episode of RH of BH aired.

It finally clicked on the timing of it all ... now I get it.

My advice to Allison is to review this segment and then get the heck away from Camille. If someone who knows that you shouldn't drink plies you with extra strong cocktails (shockingly strong to even these other world-class partiers), starts a ruckus (inappropriate comments to Faye, who was also a newcomer/guest in the group), and then sits back after a couple of tantalizing warnings to the rival mean girl ("Do you want to go there?")and lets you do battle and take the social disapproval for it, she is not your friend. The expressions on Camille's face at times make me want to take a shower. Kyle has a bit of the bully in her at times, but Camille is no one's friend, not even her own, and can't stop herself. Yikes.

Less fights, more Beverly Hills please. Camille isn't even capable of pulling off an ambush correctly and watching her interact with her paid friends is sooooo boring. Hope you have her replacement waiting in the wings.

Okay...you've got my attention! Can you let us in on your suspicions?!?!?

I think Allison Dubois is getting what she deserves after all this time fooling the public on Medium....

No need to bring that medium-woman on the show. The episode was disturbing. 100% nastiness. Her vulgar language and gestures were so off. If she wasn't there it would be much more interesting to watch and to see how the situation between six ladies will develop. That woman stole the show for all the wrong reasons. She was repulsive and I hope no more haters apart from Camille will be included in the RHBH.

You should check your Tivo. That was after.

Oh yea sure. That's why you typed in the website, read this blog, and left a comment. Because you are so over it. You are about as fake as Camille, lol!

Please please MORE LISA!! She is absolutely hilareous! :) ... and such a relief after all the DE_RA_MA!!

they did show it several times, she ask camille what she is doing for spring break and camille tells her taking the kids and going to hawai and kyle says by yourself etc... they did show it.

A more appropriate name for this is the Real Housewives of the Beverly Hillbillies.

Dave, Do you re-shoot scenes?

I have a question I've always wanted to know??

When are those interviews where the women talk about whats going on during the show filmed? after the scene or after filming is over completely? and who are they talking to? is someone asking them questions and they just answer or how does that work???

Love that "Housewives of Walmart" idea. Same type of gals, less or no money, same personalities, and same problems on a lower income bracket. Love love love the idea!!

Camille's next dinner party should have chairs with "ejection buttons"!

It's interesting how some people are asking why the conversation that started all this nonsense isn't aired--Have you people not read the previous blogs by the producer???? It WASN'T filmed!

In all honesty, who cares what was said/not said--the ladies clearly need to drop the whole mess and get on with being the charitable ladies they appear to be (with the exception of Camille--have seen nothing by way of charity on her part--maybe I missed that episode.)
