Hello Washington! Bravo asked me to blog, and I was happy to as I was born in DC and spent my first few years in McLean, with a Dad in the Pentagon during the pre-Watergate era. When this show was announced, I wondered what it would be like -- how on earth they could do a Real Housewives show in DC without political candidates and lobbyists? None of them would do the show, but then again, they wanted “socialites” for ours and we all know how well that worked out.
Enter Mary – so far we like Mary. She has a fun husband who isn’t afraid to wear colorful trousers, five kids and a biometric guard on her closet door to keep her 23 year old out of it. She's fun when she's tipsy and wants to integrate DC hair salons, but otherwise seems a bit too earnest. Let's hope that changes.
Stacie…I’d probably enjoy having a drink with her, and she seems like a good mom, but I'm just not excited about anything else there. Good on her for selling real estate in a tough market, but I'm not on fire. She also seems way too quick to defend people she doesn't know, which in Washington, New York or anywhere else will get you killed.
Lynda – oh my. Lynda seems like the Ramona of this crew. What exactly does she provide for her clients, whom she says are dignitaries and ambassadors? Inquiring minds would love to know. I’m sure she runs a successful business, but it's all in the editing and in this edit, she kind of looked like a madam with a witty boyfriend. We shall see.
From the meadows of somewhere southwest of London, Cat flew in 18 months ago. Apparently she doesn't know quite what to do with herself once she leaves her Danielle Steele novel and the house. She seems quite lovely and sincere but got off on completely the wrong foot when she tried to draw a line between the personality of a leader and his effectiveness. From where I sit – a guy can be lots of fun at parties and not good at his job. She said that Bush always had time to show up at photography events, and Obama never has. That doesn’t surprise me one little bit. What's more important, passing out awards or figuring out healthcare reform?
OK, my biggest, burning-est question is, why wasn’t Edwina Rogers made a housewife? I really loved her and her polo hat. Oh, I think I know why – she was worried she'd never work again. Loved seeing her rake the giggly Barbie doll over the coals.
Speaking of giggly Barbie dolls, I have to tell you that my mother was horrified that the Salahis were included on the show, and even went so far as to say that they shouldn't be on television after the White House incident. Why? We lived there in the 70s, and although Mom and Dad were never political headliners themselves, they socialized with lots of people who were, and attended lots of parties, including some at the White House, WITH invitations.
When I watched Edwina question Michaele about her work as a lobbyist, I was convinced that Michaele was lying through her teeth, and probably never lobbied for anything other than party invitations. However I was surprised to do a little googling and discover that she actually did lobby a bill to help out the winery. Too bad she couldn’t speak in coherent sentences when asked about it.
Verdict? Four nice girls plus one who I think has engaged in bad behavior. Let's see how this shakes out – I’ll be watching – will you?
If you liked my blog, check out our book, Little Kids, Big City, which I wrote with my husband (who in season two will be Rich's stylist – LOL).
Alex......I totally agree with your view of the new DC housewives show, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to blog !
i think you watch everything around you w an open heart n mind...then form an opinion...thats what i love so much about you...your as real as it gets but ur nice till pushed over the edge...you check n double check your facts!!!!! p.s. you n ur hubby r wonderful together. people r just butt hurt that they arent as happy as you too... YOU ROCK MY SOCKS!!!!
Alex- Direct hit! Your blog, as always, is concise and point on with great humor. The jury is still out for me on DC. I guess we'll have to watch what happens!
Nice blog! Like you,I would love to hear why Lynda's modelling agency caters to digniatries and ambassadors. I cannot think of ONE good reason. We'll see is she addresses that question head on.
Alex, Terrific blog! Very insightful. You have changed immensely during the time you have been on RHNY, or maybe it is just my opionion of you that has changed. The housewives of the other franchises pale in comparison. Tell Simon he should do backup for Gladys Knight cause he is a PIP! Much success to you both and your kids.
Hi Alex, Excellent blog and thanks for sharing about your life in DC. Waiting for u and Simon to visit North Miami Beach, Florida for your book signing. Luv your style and you are a classy lady. Enjoy the week.
Love your blog and point of view! Couldn't have said it better myself. Ultimately, I think the DC cast should be scrapped. They don't seem to have chemistry. We shall see if it improves...
Great post Alex. I think we will all be wide-eyed as to see what happens this season with the Salahis. I think every series has to have a crazy, looney toon and D.C. bolted out the door with theirs! I will check out your book and I admire you for raising your kids in New York (which I love).
Stacy -Savannah, Ga.
Alex, you are the best! Am eagerly waiting to see you on the next season of RHONY. Your intellect and insights are a much needed antidote to the vanity, pettiness, and superficiality of so many of the other housewives -- and I mean the entire franchise, not just NY.
Absolutely love you Alex and I HOPE you will return to NY Real Housewives. Without you or B I think it will be a bore:)
I loved your blog, but I have to admit...Stacie & Mary are my fav's. So far they seemed the most grounded and they were competeting for bragging rights. Cat was constantly bragging and name dropping which was hard to watch and just irritating to say the least.
I will save my comments/thoughts on Michaele until I actually see the episode relating to the scandal. What I will say...Michaele appears to be geniune and not trying to seem like something she's not. People in the "real world" can also appreciate that. I can't say she is my fav but she is getting up there ( of course for now...)
Netherless, Great Blog!!!!
I think you are just too nice Alex! I really did not care for the show or the women who were on it. I found it totally boring. I was thinking I should give it one more try but I am not really sure. This show did not leave me with a feeling of wanting more. I will see how I feel on Thursday. I may or may not watch it.
Alex, I think that your observations are spot on. The comment you made about Lynda being the Ramona of the group made me LMAO. I am a big fan of Ramona and am a big fan of Lynda. With respect to the others: one is a wallflower, one seems entitled, one seems snobby, insecure and a fish out of water and the last one is simply delusional. I'll let you figure out who I'm referring to on your own.
I miss watching my RHONYC girls. Hope you, Alex and the boys are doing well!
Alex, First of all; I love you for all your honesty, humbleness, kind and truthful demeanor, and your beautiful family. Simon's quirkiness and your adorable children have grown on me season after season, and I am honored to say that your children can climb up my leg anytime lol. But in all honesty, I would just like to thank you for helping me by reminding me how important it is to truly stick by those friends and causes that mean the most to us. And as with some housewives I respect the tenacity you possess when it comes to protecting those relationships! So bravo! and I truly can't wait to see more of you and your beautiful family on Bravo!
Thanks for the insight, Alex. I feel the same way, and now that you blogged your opinions, I don't feel like I'm totally off track in my opinions. I love that your parents lived there and know how the game is played. Can't wait for your next season to start and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your book!!
Hello Alex, I totally agree, the DC wives... Boring... I like couple of the ladies but something is missing, don't know what it is...
I agree with the other viewer...I think you were too nice!! I never missed an "Housewives" episode but I won't rush home for this one. Who knows...I'm dedicated to the "Housewives" franchise. I'm with you Alex... "Lets see how this shakes out".
I've watched all the Housewives shows (except for Atlanta which I couldn't sit through) but I think I'm gonna pass on this one and watch LA Ink instead.
I always look forward to your blog, Alex. Please share your thoughts about last night's episode of RHONJ. :)
Alex....your comments were spot on, as usual. Think Bravo missed with boat with the DC crowd......boring, boring, boring. Having been in Goverment myself......one thing learned early on is NEVER discuss politics or religion in a social setting (especially where alcohol is involved). People get upset, passionate, etc. and feelings get hurt. Didn't particularly care for any of this cast. And the lady? whose firm caters to Ambassadors, etc.....HUH? Just what is she providing?????????? Probably won't watch this show......sorry Bravo, big miss.
hi there Alex, its so nice to hear imputs from someone who has actually been on the show.. i am a desperate housewives fan from the beginning with Orange county and think the added seasons with new cities is awesome, however, this DC housewives or whatever to call them, has been very disappointing, from the beginning it was the bashing of current and former politcal leaders, and found that very unprofessional, and also obfensive . it only took one episode to unhook me from this season, i cant wait for the "real" housewives shows to come back on, thats what we want to see is shopping, and all the selfless life indulgances we crave to have... the DC wives dont have anything on the other housewives, if we wanted to hear politics we would tune into fox news or which ever news program suits us best!! a little frustrated...
Alex I respect your opinoin but I didnot like DC housewives. They aqre to much stick on them and I really agree with your mom That couple should not be on TV>
Dear Alex------ I thoroughly enjoy your blogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are so observant, objective and timely. My thoughts parallel yours in terms of the DC housewives and was quite astounded that Bravo would place the Salahi's on the program. I am appalled at their frivolous approach to the DC political and social settings. Perhaps if they were more involved in lobbying for health care reform, education, and environmental issues instead of acting foolish about party invitations, their presence would be taken more seriously. As for the others, Stacy appears to be the level headed woman, while Mary seems to have a drinking problem and Cat is a dismissive bore. Lynda--- well----a cross between Jill and Danielle, if you would.
My best to you and your lovely family. Can't wait until NYHW returns to Bravo.
Great idea!! Maybe Jill and crazy Kelly can move to DC. We could see more of you and Simon on RHONY. TERRIFIC!!
Alex, good summary. I recorded the first episode last week and actually had to watch it again to make sure that nothing entertaining happened that i missed...not the case. Seems pretty boring..
Alex, Love you, HWNY, and your blog. What was Bravo thinking with these DC nitwits? Love everything about you, Teresa, and Bethenny. Hurry back PLEASE!!!!!
Alex, love you and would read anything you or Simon write...but this is one Bravo show I have no interest in...the commericals were enough to turn me off. All my RH friends are boycotting this one over the gatecrashers. While I do think Bravo shouldn't reward bad behavior (wait, don't they do that with Jill and Danielle?), I am not an obama fan and would prefer to watch paint dry When will NY be back...am missing you
Alex- great blog!! i didnt know you were born in DC!! Keep blogging!! I mis you and your family on NYC.
Your evaluation was excellent and offered a wonderful summary of the show, especially for me who couldn't sit through ten minutes. I am glad you were that interested. I personally find this season quite boring. I may be prejudging a bit, but these ladies don't entertain me at all. It may get better as time goes on, but in the meantime, hopefully they let you guest blog again to keep us updated on the DC happenings.
I like you and Simon and you guys remind me of what Manhattan should be. But I think Presidents should be respected since the nation elected them. I felt the "what's more important" remark was a disrescpectful refection of of our former president and I think you made you opinion known. Everyone has right to their opinion but not all will agree. This is whats wrong with Washington and our government and I wish we as the people could change this. People may not agree and Cat was wrong for bringing her opinion is this intimate setting. There is a time and a place. I think the below the radar inuendos should stop then maybe what the people want would actually be heard. They are well paid elected officials, not servants. let's try to work together to make thing better for ALL!
Hmmmm, the jury is still out, but I am thinking I woud rather watch a full hour of Kelly, Danielle or even LuAnne.
Hi, Alex! I love your blog! Started watching RH with the Orange County gals. I've watched all the RH show so far. I have to say I won't be watching RHDC. What a lame bunch of people. They are not interesting or 'real' in any way. I'm also not a fan of RHA. They, like the DC crowd, are fake and phoney. They are all just 'wanna' be' something they are not! I love RHNY, especially you and Simon! Can't wait to see you back!
Hi, Alex! I love your blog! Started watching RH with the Orange County gals. I've watched all the RH show so far. I have to say I won't be watching RHDC. What a lame bunch of people. They are not interesting or 'real' in any way. RHDC is the worst show! Bravo really dropped the ball on this one! I'm also not a fan of RHA. They, like the DC crowd, are fake and phoney. They are all just 'wanna' be' something they are not! Bravo could take off RHDC and RHA and no one would miss them! I love RHNY, especially you and Simon! Can't wait to see you back!
Love reading your blogs ... Can't wait until next season on RHONY, also hoping Bethany returns.
Your insights are interesting, but please leave politics out. I'm an educated midwestern-conservative and a Bush fan/supporter.
Alex, I value your opinion and that is what brought me to this particular blog post. I have seen 2 episodes of the DC Housewives and this is the first season (and group of ladies) that I can't seem to embrace. I can't find that "I'm interested in what they're up to" connection with any of them, and I'm digging deep. Michaele turns my stomach. The rest are pretty much boring to me and so far removed from reality that it's hard to connect with their personalities. I'm trying to keep an open mind and figure out what my particular problem is with the DC Housewives. I shall watch the next episode, giving at least three tries before tuning out. Thanks for your insight.
To date, I have loved watching all of the Housewives, however this group is not at all interesting. Also, they seem to be acting for the cameras, while the other groups have appeared candid. I believe Bravo missed the boat with this group, and I predict that the ratings will suffer.
The show is boring! I live in Maryland near DC so I thought I'd watch it but it just isn't all that interesting.
I agree with your comment about the disrespect Alex showed with her comment about President Bush. She is to blog her opinion about the show NOT her political views. Why do celebrities think SO much of themselves that they think we need to know their political opinions and Alex's crack was snarky!! I could sure make some disrespectful remarks about our current president, but I won't because I don't think it is the proper forum nor or readers of this blog interested. BTW it appears the marjority of Americans are now agreeing with me.
HW of DC is going to be a different show because of its location and I'm not sure I'm interested...
However, those who point to respecting the Presidency, while correct, they should reflect for a moment about how Bush 43 was treated by many. The Double standards are ironic, and I'll leave it at that.
I like Bethenny and have enjoyed Ramona and Alex on her show but found myself tired of the drama of the NYC HW's.
Hi Alex, I'm glad to see you're blog'in. It seems that you and Stacey are the only real DC Housewifes.
Honestly, Alex, seriously...Mary is too nice? She takes the high road. Makes it work and does not seek drama. I personally find that refreshing and when I watch Bethanys new show, and hear her relief at her new drama free life I have to wonder, why do I feel like YOU are trying to stir things up? Cant we just watch and not pick pick pick.
I appreciate you not being afraid to speak your truth and share your own opinions. Even when I don't agree with your blog opinions 100%, I admire your fairness and your writing talent. Bravo was dead spot on for asking you to be another Guest Blog! Bravo for them! And good to keep up with you over the summer! Can't wait to see the next RHNYC if only to see you, Simon, Bethenn (I hope), and Ramona's daughter, Avery.
