Simon van Kempen

Simon talks about Kelly photography skills, Jill and LuAnn's sleepover party, dysfunctional dads and more.

on Apr 8, 20100

Bethenny arrives, which to me is surprising, as I’m somewhat shocked that she’d be complicit in what is an ambush of Jill. Maybe Ramona was right, and this was the only way to get them to talk and in the end they did sit down. The problem with meetings like this is that Bethenny had had the time to prepare and Jill was caught off guard. Just when they’re breaking it down the tea ladies come in. Why? I am not sure.

But then I am not sure why LuAnn barged in stating their car was outside, although clearly Jill was not going to give any ground. Anyway Jill after promising, she wasn’t going to tear up; finally showed her softer side; about time. I can’t help but laugh that LuAnn was also upset that Bethenny ‘didn’t even say hello.’

I’ll let next weeks previews speak for themselves – but it looks like we’ll finally get to see Ramona’s well-trailed walk/waltz/saunter down the runway.

This week has been a big week for us. Last week Alex and I live tweeted on the Bravo Talk Bubble, helping #RealHousewives to trend on Twitter for the 1st time, after a weekend of Easter egg hunts on Monday Alex and I rang the closing bell of NASDAQ, Tuesday our book, Little Kids Big City was published, Wednesday, we held our first signing at our local independent book store, BookCourt and tonight we were at Columbus Circle for a Manhattan signing. Next week we’re off to LA, Orange County, and then Dallas and then the following week to Boston and then Miami and surrounding areas.

I really enjoy reading Alex and your comments, you are a fun and witty match and sum things up perfectly. You are a lovely couple and yes, in the beginning, viewers did think that you were a bit snotty but the truly in love with each other, earthy, intellectual couple has come out and we are enjoying every bit of it.

Simon,

I fell in love with you and Alex from the moment you came on screen, while other's called your relationship strange and wierd, I found it wholly refreshing that you both were secure in yourselve's enough to show the love you have with the million's of viewers. In today's age where marriage is thought of in months now and not year's its wonderful to see how two people can come together and share a wonderful...albiet sometimes unrealistic (and by unrealistic I simply mean that the average watcher does not get to spend thousands a year on a shopping dream..we only dream of such things....) life together and have found a honest love.

I am always so impressed by your son's and your parenting skills, I am currently teaching my daughter to say color's in english, spanish and french and its fun for her to see your boys do the same things we are doing for her at the house. She gets utterly excitied everytime your family comes on!!!

I have to amdmit I never thought I would comment on anyone's blog but your blogs lately have been so spot on and to be honest...you and Alex have always been my favorite couple i am with every other fan that is hopping and praying that BRAVO keeps you on next season you both are so grounding and refeshing to watch. I simply adore the love you share with us...I for one can see how passionatly you care about each other and how that reflects in your family.

Good luck with the new book I will deff. be buying it come pay day!!!

Simon needs to stay on the show if only for the blogs. His is always the one I read first almost to get a baseline for the episode's events.

Simon: OK, I used to think you and Alex were too fixated on social-climbing, but I'm thinking the show's editing influenced my opinion too much. You and Alex are the NORMAL ones on the show. Love you blog; keep up the good work. Wish you and Alex and your two adorable boys all the best!

Love your blog. You're a good writer and both you and your wife seem to have excellent judgment. I hope to read your book. I have a rambunctious little guy myself. He's already doing crazy things at one year old and I'm sure he'll be "crawling up" people in no time at all. I really enjoy watching you, Alex and the boys!

Simon, I love your run down of last weeks' show. I think you are such a sensible man, I hope everyone of the housewives noticed that the appropriate way to raise young children, just like you and Alex did on the episode last week, when you need to have a adult conversation about anything children don't need to know about:you send them out of the room. Bravo, Simon and Alex!!! I for one can't wait to read your book. Is it just me or is the show loosing it's entertainment value? In it's place I'm finding way too much backbiting and badmouthing. I think I read somewhere that you and Alex and your adorable little french speaking tots would not be returning next season, I hope that's not true! God Bless You and Yours

Simon & Alex,

When are the two of you going to be in Massachusetts? What is the store will you be at? I would love to come and buy your book. Simon, I never did care for you but you are growing on me. Alex, I thought you were so nice to B when she was telling you about her father, you are a very kind and gentle person.

Ok, I admit, the Vankamps were a bit much the first season, a little 'want to be'. However, you two have completely won me over, and my respect. You two are the only 'normal' on the show.

Bethany is real, but a little 'angry', though honest. The 'Countless' is exactly what Mario called her. She is so full of herself, I want to vomit. Jill is a money hungry mean girl, insecure, and Ramona is a toss up depending on what day you get her. She has her own self serving issues, and insecurities.

Good luck on your book, you should also start your own clothing line! Think about it.

I must say, this season has been a real eye-opener. I'm seeing different sides to some of the cast members and it is not a pretty sight. I have been most pleased in seeing that you and your wife seem to be genuine in your kindness towards others, and that you both seem to be loyal to those you call friends. This is like a breath of fresh air, after watching all the B v. J drama, I would really love to know the whole story there! Who really broke up this friendship?? Ahh, life's little mysteries. I enjoy your blog the most, keep up the good work, well wishes to you and your wife on the new book.

Hello Simon,

I agree with everyone that this season you and Alex are really enjoyable to watch. In the two previous seasons the show made you both seem really "weird" (only word I can think of right now) but I always laughed and neither of you were mean spirited so I didn't finish watching the show cringing about the episode. I think your blog is right on about the entire season so far. To be honest the fighting between Kelly and Bethanny last year was kind of fun to watch this year it's on a different level and I see we are getting what we asked for from Bravo.

I must say, I wasn't a fan of the VanKamps but you two have been growing on me this season. What a bunch of self anointed queens there are on this show lately. It seem that "fame" has gone to some people's heads.

With all the book signings and traveling and taping the show, are you still keeping your day job, Simon?

Simon, When I first started watching the Real Housewives I thought Alex and you were alittle odd. Now after this season I come realize that the two of you are the normal ones. What is up with LuAnn? It must be nice to know everything and tell everyone what they do wrong. Good luck with the book.

Hi Simon,

It is refreshing to see someon actually blog what happened and not what they want everyone to think happened.

Am I the only one who found Jill showing LuAnn her new Saks card completely vulgar???

Love reading your blog! It is refreshing to watch you and your family. Best wishes to you all!

Dear Simon McCord,

Thanks for your 2 cents. That's about what it's worth...

Your blogs have a continuing theme: You love your wife and "chums" and dislike most everyone else on the show. You've overlooked the cruel and insensitive remarks by Bethenny and Ramona. Yet you harbor deep hatred for anything spoken by LuAnn. What, pray tell, has SHE done to YOU, specifically? The fixation you hold on Jill is abnormal, for a casual acquaintance. She tried the best she could to make amends with Alex by visiting and spending time with the chums. It's time to let go of you "Jillosy".

BTW: Gilles Bensimon IS a world famous photographer. He won't be less famous just because YOU don't believe it! Kelly mentioned him because of her ironic plight. SHE couldn't work a simple point and shoot camera which is idiot proof. It was funny, dude. Stop looking down your nose at her and everyone else. You're not better than anybody.

Simon,

I think you and Alex have come through as the most grounded persons on this show. As a mother of two young children, I really enjoy watching your storylines. I also love to read the blogs. Bottom line, your blog is too long. I would love to read it but I can't get past page two. Maybe you can do the abridged version for your time-limited fans???

Sincerely, April

Simon, I have watched you and your wife deal with many rude comments on this show and i have to say, you two have the most class. Damn the people who judge you for your pants :) You and your wife are logical, up-front, empathetic, real people. I love how mature and sincere your wife is and your sense of humor really brightens the show. Thank you for the breathe of fresh air that you both provide.

Simon, I just love you and Alex. I couldn't agree with you more on so many of your points!! You two seem the most level headed out of the bunch. Anyone who is considered your friend is blessed to know you.

Thanks for the grand review of the episode-I find your blogs (intelligent Alex included) to be the only readable, articulate, FUNNY paragraphs on this show. Listening is a skill set that obviously is too difficult for the other housewives--it takes energy, brain cells and patience--none of which are demonstrated by anyone but you two. I think Bethany could get there--LuAnn should know better--Jill is becoming a talking head--and Kellie just can't help herself (her comments about fur say it all...)

Keep it up--love the banter and you actually give some insight that is badly needed--not to mention I will visit Brooklyn on my next trip to NYC--they owe you big PROPS for advertising the variety of experiences to be had in your town.

Simon -- I absolutely love it that your description of your book is "stories of what we discovered along this mad path of parenting". That is so very true and it's a wonderfully humbling experience. Thanks for putting it into words.

Best of luck to you one the continued journey! I look forward to more of your insights on the ladies too.

Simon, you are my favorite! Appreciate the way you and Alex have made the choice to take the high road (and it is a lonely road on this show, isn't it?)

We also love Brooklyn especially since both of our sons now live in Williamsburg and Ft Greene. I am still stunned to hear that there are actually people who live in NYC but have never traveled to Brooklyn!

Simon, Simon, Simon! You truly are a class act. Not only are you and Alex the kindest people on the show, you are also clearly the most intelligent, which is a something I would expect from the other ladies, but alas, not.

Thank you so much for giving the viewing public something interesting to watch. Were it not for you, I would have stopped watching the show long ago. This season has been atrocious. The ladies, with the exception of Alex, have ALL been vile, "B" included...let's not forget her serious screaming matches...

You and your wife are a pleasure to watch! You are intelligent, you are knowledgeable, open-minded, as well as cultured. NONE of the others hold a candle to you! Too bad you didn't get your own show, because, quite frankly, I would watch you over ANYONE ( including B) any day!! Keep on being you!!!

Simon,

I know the other ladies like to make fun of you and your flare for fashion and the "red pants". I give you and Alex a great deal of credit for being who you are without pretense. You have the ability to out no matter where and just be who you are without a care. Good for you for being true to yourselves.

Simon, I love you and Alex (and the boys) so much! You are genuine, real people and I wish you all the best life has to offer. I will be buying your book (I haven't bought any of the other NYC'ers books, but want to support you and Alex on your journey). May you have success in your book & happiness with Alex and the boys!!

Simon, I have to admit that the first seasons you and Alex were not my favorites. But this season you both have won me over and are now two of my three faves on the show! I actually enjoyed your blog this week. It was somewhat entertaining. Have fun on your trips. I did want to clarify one thing for you. A "high end" thrift shop is usually one which accepts only used clothing with well known (high end) designer labels, as opposed to just accepting any clothing label. For people on a tight budget, this can be a way of obtaining nice clothes. (I don't personally shop at any, but have heard about them from a couple coworkers.) Your comment could be construed as somewhat snobbish.

Great blog Simon. I just watched this episode again with a friend as painful as it was, the only bright spots involved your wife, providing that grounded voice of reason. I'm so glad she's been there for Bethenny so consistently. A bright spot of sanity in the crazy cesspool some of these "ladies" have fallen in to. Look forward to your next write!
