- Stefan: No Regrets
- The Season 5 runner-up reveals his true feelings about Hosea and whether he would ever compete again.
Bravotv.com: OK, cook the meal of your life: What was the inspiration behind each dish?
There are some issues with cooking the meal of your life. There was not enough time to produce the meal of your life. The kitchen is not yours and the produce and proteins are not the ones you were thinking all along. And they give you four-inch plates to plate it on. I truly believe, if you ask Hosea or Carla they would answer the same.
Bravotv.com: Did you know before you came what you would cook?
I had no idea what i was going to cook. Top Chef is different then anything I have ever done before and like you have seen last night alligator. Ha! We don't have alligators in Finland, Germany, or anywhere else i have lived. Oops!I had one as a child, but it was rubber.
Bravotv.com: Of course there was a twist (there always is), were you kicking yourself that you let Hosea choose his knife before you?
No — why would I kick myself? He is a great guy. I thought I was just beeing respectful and let him pull first.
Bravotv.com: Were you worried about cooking the alligator?
Did I look worried? I swear when I cut the tail off, the meat looked like seabass, tasted like chicken, crumbled like tuna, and the skin could be a purse or a pair of Fabio's shoes.
Bravotv.com: Were you happy you got Marcel to help you? How much influence did he have on the meal?
It was my meal and not Marcel's meal. I picked Marcel because I looked in Carla's eyes and she was freaked out if she would have been paired up with Marcel. And let me tell you one thing, and that is to all the Marcel haters out here that he is maybe a little wierd sometimes but the guy can cook and I'm happy I had him as a sous-chef. Thank you Marcel.

Greetings from snowy Finland! We're proud of you! I was certain from the middle of the season that Tom would not let you win. He took your weakest dishes in the finale and blew them out of proportion. You did as you said and ran circles around Hosea. Stefan, you're the winner, no matter what they say. Tom's a poor judge. Padma and Gail are just so pretty, one can't really be mad at them (Stefan, you lucky dog!). It's sad that they had all those top chefs at the finale, but chose to ignore their opinions. You should have been Top Chef. Hosea's a great guy, but not worthy.

Lieber Stefan!
I explored your new cockychefclothing website and was appalled. There is no real "design" to the limited t-shirts on offer. Your slogans on the t-shirts are insane and demeaning to women. Whatthehelliswrongwithyou, buddy?
I doubt that you will make much from that venture. Stick to the food and only the food. Auf Wiedersehen!!!!

Stefan, you were a great villian for season 5 and someone that made the show a lot of fun to watch. At the end, your good heart, humor and intelligence really showed through.

Well done! Great finale and best wishes.

Hi Stefan,
It appears that in the end, you have won many hearts from the viewers. It was great to team see "Team Euro" reunited at the reunion. I'm concerned by the comment from you and Fabio that you are hanging around his restaurant "all the time". Does that mean your business dropped off? How could you find the time to hang out at your buddy's place? I hope that things pick up for you. BOL - Best of Luck!
btw: you're right that the fans will remember you for your winning ways more than the lackluster title holder (Hosea who?)...

You are DELICIOUS, my dear.
Under any criteria, you are the winner. I think that is what bothers the audience most. You should have won based on the finale, and should have won based on the season. It's just so crystal clear that it's frustrating to the majority of us.
You seem like a class act, nothing "pedestrian" about you or your food. (Hear that Padma!)
Anyway, wishing you continued success in your career. Will you have a website that we can keep up with your goings on?

Stefan...from the very first episode my husband and I said "Now THAT is a guy I would love to have a beer with!" You are confident in your abilities (as well you should be) and, unfortunately, those who don't have much experience with talent mistook that as you being "cocky." Ironically, Tom Collichio and Anthony Bourdain are two of the "cockiest" individuals ever...and that makes us love them even more. Stefan, you're in good company!

Best post I've read on the net about this debacle:
'I'd like to point out that Hosea felt it necessary to try and cripple Stefan in order to beat him. Sticking him with the alligator and taking all the foie gras and all the caviar, for no other reason than to prevent Stefan from getting it, does not exactly say "I am confident in my own abilities and know that my cooking can stand up against anybodies, no matter what."'If these "experts" (Tom, I'm looking at you) want a REAL top chef then they have to use the same protein for the main. I mean, say you have a finale and one of the judges doesn't like fish. The chef who used fish as a protein isn't going to win are they? Say you have a finale and one of the judges doesn't like dessert? Oh wait, never mind.
I'm still dying to know why Tom can't make dessert seeing as it's so "easy". One day he may tell us....

I LOVED the Top Chef show, and was a VERY faithful viewer (from the very 1st Top Chef's season). This season did it for me... I usually record new episodes on my DVR and view them the next day... But when I found that Hosea was the Top Chef winner, I've erased the last episode without watching it... This is the very first time I did not watch a Top Chef episode... I'm VERY disappointed, and was hoping that it would be Karla or Stefan... I will not even tune-in for the reunion show... forget it... If the next season will be like that, then I'm not watching any more...

Stefan, you were consistently excellent all season, including the finale, and definitely deserved to win. It was obvious by the last episodes that Bravo was trying its hardest to portray you as an arrogant jerk. But then you helped your fellow contestants on the Christmas challenge, bailed out your team on restaurant wars, helped Carla shuck oysters, and comforted her in the finale. All of these things showed your true character. Open up a restaurant soon, I'd love to eat there! Oh, and the 2 judges who didn't like your dessert and called it "pedestrian" and "throwaway" are now hawking fast-food hamburgers and Diet Coke respectively. That doesn't say much for their palates in my humble opinion.

Stefan what a chef and what a personality. Would Americans let a European take the Top Chef title in their turf, I think not! Sorry, despite all your creativity, excellence, and inventiveness on the fly, they let the white trash win.
Have they even ever listened to Toby's opinion? No he is just the Brit who is supposed to make funny and snide remarks. So Tom said that you were taking things too casually in the semifinal and seemed overconfident, so is it a personality contest? If so then how did Hosea win despite flicking off on camera, and cheating on his girlfriend? You won when you cooked that gator! You will be a legend one day just like many of the legends that judged you.

I absolutely loved you from the first episode and had to support my fellow European. I always understood your approach to life and confidence. Your brash exterior reminded me of the Polish males I was surrounded by for the majority of my life.
I really disagree with the judging. Other esteemed chefs at the dining table also thought that you won the night. Hosea may have gotten the check, but you demonstrated time and time again that you are Top Chef. I hope you and Fabio get your own TV show!!

Dude! You're top chef! Way to go, excellent performance throughout the season. You were always a team player, always helped in the kitchen and by far the single most impressive chef on any season of the show. By comments in the finale, Hubert Keller, John Besh, and Tory McPhail, Tom really missed the mark ... and his girls. So I hope you enjoy a great following of people who think you are waaaay cool.

Stefan, I have to admit, it took me awhile to warm to you. I really thought you would win, since a Euro hasn't done so before, but also, because you were truly an artist! It's amazing to see how talented most of the chefs are, especially towards the end of the show. I thought it would be you, Jeff, and Fabio for the final three and still believe, even though I loved Karla and Josea, you were the best three. I grew to realize what a warm and thoughtful, yet competitive and "pot-stirring" person you are. Since Richard didn't win the Top Chef and should have, you will certainly reap the benefits of the exposure (no, not that kind) and do very well with a restaurant of your own. I've love to eat there!! Thanks for being such a class act showing nothing but sincerity and dignity at the end.

Stephan, you should have won. If the judges do not factor in all of the challenges that you won and quick fires than why bother...to me the quick-fires and other challenges are what really what brings out the gifted chefs from the average chefs. You shined so many times. I thought you had a much harder challenge than Hosea in the final eposiode and once again you shined. You were the true winner.

Who cares what the final dish/outcome was? You all won... You get to work with Chef Ripert, travel with him to the food and wine fest., you have earned much respect from the top chefs of the world, and that skill and talent will be your doorway to much success.. You will earn that $100,000 many times over in your near future.. You are still a winner and always will be after your exposure to your talent on this show.. Stefan just wanted to write a quick note to let you know it was a pleasure watching you this season -- it was evident from the first episode that you were one of the most talented chefs of the group and this was confirmed weekly as you were consistently the benchmark of the competition and the man to beat -- if that isn't a "top chef" I don't know what is. As someone who watched the entire season and has seen most of the past previous seasons I thought the finale was ridiculous from the three course meal without a dessert to the deliberations and their contradictory and convoluted reasoning. I am sure that this is but a small setback for you and your future career -- while I will be interested in seeing your future work as a chef after this season I have no interest in watching TC again.

I have to admit, up front, I was a Carla fan. That having been said, I still would have loved to see you win. Hosea should never have made it as far as he did. Double-ditto Leah, but I digress.....

Stefan, I really enjoyed watching you in TC5. I don't think you're cocky at all- in fact you seem like a really thoughtful and sweet person, and showed a lot of leadership all throughout. It was touching to see how you reacted when Carla cried at judges table.
I'm truly disappointed that you didn't win- but as you said, winning 10 elimination challenges proves your skill much better than just winning 1 3-course meal. The judging at the finale was unbalanced- seemed like the opinion of all the judges at the Commander's Palace were discarded to favor Tom, Padma and Gail's opinions. You were the best chef, and while you had some lows, you were more consistently on the top than Hosea.
All the best to you Stefan. You and Fabio are great!

Stefan-
This is not Top Personality or Top Nice Person. This is Top Chef! You ARE the Top Chef! Hosea? Hosea who? He never impressed me with his cooking. I loved your arrogant, cocky, confident attitude. It shows your confidence in your abilities as a chef. I would prefer a chef with attitude than a nice chef who cannot cook. This finale was BS!
I'm sick of those judges talking about "soul"
Who Cares about Soul! I want to eat tasty food even if my chef has attitude. Toby, Hubert Keller, Tory McPhail preferred your cooking. Jean Georges & Eric Ripert even picked you as the clear winner in the other challenges. Tom, Padma, and Gail? Let's replace them with real chefs.
What a joke.

I think the world can be divided into whether you are a Stefan guy, or a hosea guy. Hosea turned out to be a total douche, and you were a cool guy that didn't take himself to seriously. They tried to make you a bad guy at first but it became clear pretty quickly that hosea was a total nerd and you knew what was up! By the last few episodes i would cringe at the stuff Hosea was doing, he was just lame. I mean you were all cool and let him get first pick of the knives. and he repays you by hogging all the foi gras AND the caviar. It was clear he was intimidated by you all season. He benifited from getting Richard as the sous, its no coincidence that he cooked his best meal on this episode. That appetizer was 100% blaze i am sure. The two raw dishes were a throaway between you two , all he did was throw some fish on a plate, he didnt season it properly, too bad they hated the fact you froze your fish. His third course looked like something i would have seen from richard, I havent seen hosea put out anything that looked like that all season, I havent seen him use foi gras ever. I mean this is a guy that served crab out of a can. The last course was more his style, but who wants venison for their last couse. And lastly, it shows what kind of person he is, that he would cheat on his girlfriend. He just turned out to be a little weasly nerd who never made a memorable dish. You were a cool guy that won the most ellemination challenges, and consoled carla at the end.

It is a complete travesty you were not named Top Chef ! From week 1 you were better than the rest - Hosea is a talented chef but did not deserve the title of Top Chef. I am very disappointed with the judges' decision to name Hosea as winner - like you said, you showed consistency the entire season - I can't believe Tom said he did not take this into consideration when making his decision - solely basing it on the 3 course meal you made that night - that is the worse judging system ever! I wholeheartedly agree with Toby's decision to fight for you - if I were at Judge's table , I would have done the same!!

You are the top chef!!!! You have the skills, the leadership, and the attitude. The top chef should be able to cook any course. Hosea had a narrow range, and the judges rewarded him for it. He might have gotten the title and the money, but you are the better chef.

p.s. It was so sweet when you were consoling Carla during the judging in the finale...it shows how you do have a kind heart no matter what anyone else says!!

Stefan, You are a true gentleman; the way you cared for Carla at the end showed your heart. You are so funny. I loved all your comments. I especially loved your defensiveness when you stood up to the judges, then look sheepishly down at your feet (cuz you were in the wrong, hee hee). Your skills are amazing and I wish I could have tasted your food. Poor Josea was so jealous of you all the way through the contest, but he could not help it. It is not for me to say who should have won, but if they judged on the entire challenge you would have been the Top Chef by a mile.

Stefan I thought you and Fabio were so awesome you would make a real good television show. I mean really you were both hilarious and kicked ass over all of them I think it was very biased and Hosea was very very very lucky. If you two Euro Dudes had a show I would definately watch it!!!!!!! Love Ya

Stefan.. Don't have any regrets.. You did a fantastic job.. and, as Richard has said, ... You didn't get the "egg", but, YOU got the chicken... and chickens lay eggs.. You will go very far... And, as much as they tried to portray you as cold/arrogant, whatever... it's pretty obvious by the way you treated the women and your colleagues, that you have a "soft center"... just like your deserts.... You are just a very focused, serious, perfectionist when it comes to your job/cooking.. it's also obvious that you are probably a very nice, fun guy when it comes to life outside of the kitchen.. and, you always tried to help your colleagues.. Don't listen to the negatives.. You will go far...

stefan, you know you are good....we know you are good! Loved all you guys in season 5! What was disappointing were the challenges...they were stupid and compromised all of the talent. Top Chef needs to do more cumulative scoring and stop basing winners on luck of the draw!!

Stefan, you're a stand up guy, have thought so from the beginning. Can't wait to read your book. Just one thought, after looking at your catering website and all the gorgeous desserts, why didn't you do one of those? At least Gal wouldn't have been able to say your dessert was circa 1982!

You had the only complete 3 course dinner, prepared within the limits of what you could do. I thought the judges did not appreciate that well enough. You worked wit an alien protein and had the best dish this finale. I thought Hoseas choice for the last course was very very safe and not very inspiring.
I really think overall and in this finale it should have been you. Very disappointed with the judges.

Dear Stefan,
It sounds as though things were not what they seemed (i.e. the rivalry/hatred fest with Hosea). That's good to read.
I have to say that I didn't find you cocky (a negative word) at all. You were confident and displayed great leadership throughout the season. Your winning dishes were wonderful, obviously. That is why you won at those many times. I'm disappointed that Tom and Gail decided to deny you your rightful title after you proved time and again that you were a champion. Their reason that you "have no soul" is stupid. 5 minutes earlier they rhapsodized over your squab because it showed exactly who you were (isn't that soul?)! Your choice to end the meal with dessert was an odd reason to sway them since your desserts won RW for you & your floundering team. These judges are on the Ship of Fools.
Viel Gluck in der Zukunft...

Stefan, Colicchio is an arrogant, obnoxious fool. You are truly the Top Chef!! No contest.... Hosea's winning was Tom's way of putting you in your place. If the judging is based solely on that one last meal, then why the hell doesn't everyone just come in at the end and cook a single meal. What a friggin joke.......YOU WON!!!

You should have won Top Chef. Even if the show painted you as having an enormous ego, the truth is that you are an extremely talented chef and the class that you showed at the end of the competition when Hosea [ewwwww!] "won" (by piggybacking on Richard and by getting lucky with king's cake and knife selection) proves that you do possess the character it takes to be a Top Chef. You are creative and talented, he is mediocre. I'd pay a lot to eat in your or Carla's restaurant, easily. However, you'd have to pay *me* to eat in Hosea's.
P.S. Were my eyes playing tricks on me when I saw you using your finger to taste your food in the last episode? Say it ain't so! ;-)

I feel a little better to have stumbled on to this website. I had done a Google search with "I can't believe Stefan didn't win", and got this website.
Me and my wife have been watching this season since the first episode. It's the first time we've watched Top Chef, and the first time in a LOOONG time that I've actually followed ANY TV series throughout it's entirety.
I was really into it, and liked a lot of the chefs, so we made it a staple to watch every week.
I started to sense strangeness when Jaime got eliminated. She was obviously a better chef than the no talent slutball named Leah. Yes Jaime blew it with that salty celery, but she left before her time.
We LOVED Fabio for obvious reasons, and I was glad to hear he was on Ellen today. I rooted for him, but I knew early on that he wasn't going to last. I've always liked Stefan (my wife hasn't), even from the beginning, because he brought some sass and ego to the show. As someone else posted, a 'Top' chef should have an ego, or at least have confidence in their food. Otherwise, how would they think that they are worthy of the title of Top Chef? But now we all know that Tom has a larger ego.
When it came down to the final 3, I knew that Carla, even though I liked her spirit, wasn't going to win. She had been doing well as of late, but every win she got was narrated with a judge saying "I enjoyed it's (the meal's) simplicity" A Top Chef should be able to do complex meals as well.
But when that ho said "Congratulations Josea", our jaws dropped and I told my wife that I wasn't going to watch again. She said she would, but after getting emotionally invested in a show, then getting burned by a judge's obvious Pen1s envy, I have no faith in this so called 'competition'.
Clearly, like him or not, we all know that Stefan was the muscle this season. Everyone feared him, and rightly so. He was consistently in the top 3, with only a fault or two the whole season. Josea was in the bottom 3 back to back with his little ho girlfriend. He is weak, he is jealous, and he is not worthy of this honorary title.
The other judges obviously didn't share Tom's grudge against Stefan, but I noticed whenever it came time to judge Stefan's course, Tom would be the first one to start dogging him, to try to get the other judges in that mindset.
Tom just killed the whole season, and killed my interest in watching this show again. The two of them (Tom and Padma, or Padme, whatever) are only good for posing in the commercials on Bravo.
Man I'd like to knock a couple of Tom's teeth out, and bleach his tongue so he can never taste anything again. It may be harsh, but this is like taking back Michael Phelps' gold medals for smoking some weed. This is NOT a popularity contest, it is a competition for the BEST chef out of the batch.
Tom blew the whole concept of the show out the window with his jealousy of Stefan. Tom didn't like a good chef that could definitely outshine HIM knowing that he was better.
I don't think I'll be watching again. It took too much time to get so disappointed.
And to the people who are saying "Just chill out, it's just a show":
We are angered as viewers to have wasted weeks to see such bad judging. It was completely unfair. But you are right, it's just a show. And when BRAVO is showing things like "Housewives of LA or Atlanta", I guess I shouldn't expect much. I again see why I stopped watching TV series in the first place.

Stefan and Carla rock! Food network, they're more about cooking and less about drama. Stefan or Carla should have a cook off and just let Hosea have Season 5. Season 5 doesn't count in the Fan's eye. Hey FOOD NETWORK have a STEFAN and CARLA cook-off. COOK THE BEST MEAL without any crappy obstacles like an alligator or Casey.

Stefan,
Your good heart always shone through. Your superior skills were utterly obvious. You are top chef. No question.
