Rhylee Gerber Tells All About Living in a Van — Including the Bathroom Situation
The Below Deck deckhand answers all your burning questions about her new life in a car.
Just a while back, Rhylee Gerber sold her designer duds — and her Acura — and prepared for a new life on the road. As the Below Deck deckhand explained in an April 1 Instagram post: "I did something yesterday I’ve been wanting to do for the past 7yrs - I bought a van! ... I’ve wanted this for years and yet, I’m nervous and scared s--tless, not to mention completely unaware of my next move, as I make the necessary moves to turn this into another beautiful shelter on wheels."
A couple of weeks later, Rhylee provided an update on van life in her Instagram Stories. Responding to her followers' burning questions, the Alaska native addressed issues such as this: How does she go to the bathroom now?
For inquiring minds, here's what she had to say: "I've never been too fussy about the office but I can't stand a smelly outhouse." The caption accompanied a photo of Rhylee squatting down in a parking lot with her jeans around her ankles. That doesn't mean she won't ever use an outhouse though.
In another post, Rhylee showed a photo of a porta potty, writing: "People come from all over the world to pee in the Yukon. I'm happy to say I was one of them!"
The free spirit also shared a photo of her cozy bedroom setup, which includes a bed covered in a colorful quilt, curtained windows, and even a dainty chandelier. "I'm accustomed to [van life]," she wrote, when someone asked her how the adjustment was going. "I once renovated a 40 year old camper and lived in that during four summer seasons while charter fishing in Alaska ... I love it!!"
Rhylee also proved that she's figured out insulation and heating, and it sounds like her new life suits her well. "I can't imagine I'll ever stop traveling when there's so much to see!" she wrote.
