Miley Cyrus’ new single Malibu is all about her relationship with fiancé and complete Aussie stud muffin, Liam Hemsworth. While this isn’t the first time Miley’s written about their relationship (anyone remember Wrecking Ball?), Malibu has lots of insight into where this on-again, off-again couple is today.
But before we break it down, let’s break down the break ups and make ups. In 2009, Miley and Liam fell in love while filming The Last Song (the Nicholas Sparks’ tear jerker) and were officially a couple by 2010. They break up and make up twice before getting engaged in June 2012 (her rock is 3.5-carats). Fast forward to September 2013 when the cheating buzz is growing and Miley unfollows Liam on Twitter (the ultimate nail in the coffin for any internet-age romance) and then announces that their engagement is off. They remain “friends," Miley rebounds with Patrick Schwarzenegger, but ultimately by 2016, Miley and Liam are back together and yes, that 3.5-carat diamond is back too.
Thank goodness it worked out because now we have the gift that is Malibu. Miley wrote it in the back of an Uber on the way to The Voice and recorded it in her trailer. If that’s not country, I don’t know what is. Let’s dig into the lyrics for a peak into the state of their relationship.
“I never came to the beach or stood by the ocean,I never sat by the shore under the sun with my feet in the sand. But you brought me here and I’m happy that you did.”
This line is literally true. Miley told Billboard that she had never really been into the beach until she met Liam and he brought her to the ocean. She’s just a country girl from Tennessee (her godmother is Dolly Parton) so it was all new to her. It took falling for an Aussie to bring her to Malibu.
We watched the sun go down as we were walking, I’d spend the rest of my life just standing here talking.
You would explain the current, as I just smile.”
This lyric might be the most telling. Miley loves Liam so much that even though she has no clue what he’s talking about, she just smiles. He just yammers on using surfing lingo (undercurrents, rip tides, hang ten) and she lets him! If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.
“I never wouldn’t believed you, if there years ago you told me...I’d be here writing this song.”
Yup, three years ago, Miley was busy twerking her butt off, making out with Patrick and writing “FU” (“I got two letters for you, One of them’s F and the other’s U”) so probably not thinking about romantic walks on the beach with Liam.
“Sometimes I feel like I’m drowning and you’re there to save me. And I wanna thank you with all of my heart. It’s a brand new start. A dream come true..In Malibu.”
Overall, Malibu is a love letter to Liam. Despite all they’ve been through, Miley is happy they’ve made it through, that they have little things together and they have a fresh start. For the full experience, watch the video to see the most severe ombre ever (please don’t let that become a “thing”), Miley’s version of Ashley Simpson’s “I’m Lip-Synching on SNL Hoe-Down” dance and that 3.5-carat rock.
